Post title: The Termbase does not open in MS Word

Dear colleagues,

I was wondering whether anyone could help me with the issue I encountered. I followed all the instructions to manually add the Multiterm complement to Word and I succeeded, yet when I open the termbase I previously created from the MS Word menu, I get an empty blank page. When I use the Up and Down buttons to move around the glossary on the bottom ribbon of the word window it seems to show the entries but still - a blank document.... I need to present a paper at the uni and need to export the termbase to Word. Please help!

Hi Juan,

I opened the link you posted, but all those solutions dated 2010 to 2012. They were probably thought for Studio 2009. The comments suggest that this has been a tough problem.

Post title: No "Customer" Column

Hi Paul

I refer to the following link regarding the Project Details Window:

It clearly states the existence of the "Customer" column.
Over the last while it has dawned on me, as Nick pointed out, that it's pointless to be entering customer details every time when it is never displayed anywhere...

I've been selecting the customer I created, but then have had to add the customer name into the project name every time, just so that I can actually know for who that project is for. Please refer to attached image for more detail.

Please tell me there's a way to add the customer column.
I'd really prefer not having to type the customer name in for every project for the next two years or so.
I'd really like to see and be able to sort/group by customer.
Btw, I'm using Studio 2017 now.

Thanks in advance,
Nathanael Fourie

Hi there,

I use Studio 2017 but it applies to other versions too for that matters. Due to some changes i am implementing in the way i do translations i decided to generate a master TM made with all the TMs i have accumulated over time. This implied selecting all TM exports and importing them onto a brand new TM. Studio is notoriously slow in doing this job but i didn't expect it to be so slow.
While having taken an unacceptable amount of time to import normal TMS (with an amount of segments in the hundred-thousands), the PC has now been on for 2 days in a row trying to import a TM containing about 1 million segments and it's only about halfway through for this TM with many others to be imported. I can't stop because i'd lose all work done in these 3 days. At the same time i also think the amount of time with PC on is heading to the unbearable. Also, sometimes opening another Studio session to actually translate causes issues (almost crashes or slowdowns).
I exclude any PC issue. The machine is brand new, runs on SSDs, has 16GB DDR4 ram, an i7 Skylake CPU and no bottlenecks hardware wise.
Leaving aside the obvious inefficiency of the software, is there any way build the TM i need in a quicker way so that i can actually use the new TM in acceptable times (Like even one whole day rather than one week?).

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Enrico

Hi Enrico,
seems you are caught in this process at the moment. I am regularly updating/importing TMs with > 3 million segments. I can confirm, that even on fast mschines, it can take a looong time.

I changed my process and used xBench to delete all duplicates in the TMX files before importing. This reduced the number of segments to about 2.4 million and allowed me to convert these files on a i5 with 16 MB in about 8 to 9 hours.

I might be wrong, but Studio checks for duplicates and deletes them when importing TMs (there might be a setting somewhere to turn it on/off, no idea really). This will take enourmous amounts of time in a database, and therefore the process is/should be muh faster, if there are no duplicates from the beginning.

Does this make sense?

Post title: It is better to first work and optimize a single TMX (or series of TMX files) before importing

Optimizing the content of a TM can be tedious, but generally leave everything at the TMX level before importing. Personally I use a TMX manager like Heartsome or Olifant to get rid of repetitions and garbage with the help of RegEx instructions. Also your attribute structure will highly influence the speed of import.
With Studio 2017 and the Fragment function enabled be prepared that Trados will triple up the content with subsegment chunks for indexing possible fragment matches in future translations, you can see this by watching the file size of your TM compared to the case where this function is disabled. The fragment recall procedure takes considerable time at import.
AFAIK, Trados will allocate a certain amount of RAM depending on the amount of segments to import and your computer system specifications. A good reason to import in 1 go. My average import speed with 8GB RAM and a i5 2.5 Ghz processor is between 2000-4000 segments/second if I import more than 100K segments.

Mike

Thanks Mike and Siegfred,

I just interrupted the process and i will give up on this. Both methods you suggested sound logic and rational but they are both exceedingly time consuming. I will just keep using multiple TMs and skip on the master.

Thanks very much for your help.

On my profile you will find a Tab "Resources". In the right column you will find links to Autosuggest files I created from the latest DGT TMs. Your langugae pairs are included. Feel free to download them, the are free. Just remember, these files only work for EN-US into Italian. AutoSuggest files depend on the locale. The EN-GB files are still sitting on my computer and I'll make the available in the next few days. I will also make the TMs generated from the DGT files availabe, but again, it will take a few days.

Trados 2015/2017: will these still run correctly if I change Java 32-Bit to Java 64-Bit?

Hello,
I have to change my installed Java that is all 32-Bit to the newest Java 64-Bit. What I have currently installed and all activated are these 32-Bit versions:
1.8.0_111
1.8.0_40
1.8.0_25
1.6.0_24

Is the following scenario the correct one: I deactivate all these versions in the Java Settings and then simply install the newest Java 64-Bit ?
In the case I have some (older) programs that need the above versions, I would need to deactivate all 64-Bit versions and re-activate the 32-Bit ones.

I'm not very enlighted to do all this, but a CAT I want to use works best with the latest 64-Bit Java. My concern is that Trados 2015/2017 should still run flawlessly after these changes, I will set anyway a restore point in Windows for preventing problems, but thank you very much to let me know what you think about this scenario, AFAIK Studio probably doesn't need Java anymore, but I don't know for the latest MultiTerm 2015/2017.

Thank you,
Mike

Thank you so much for your reply. Unfortunately it didn't work as I couldn't find the version of MultiTerm that you specified. SDL replied to me and said that they will carry out a remote session so hopefully they will be able to resolve the problem.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

1) to get to the segment, just click on the problem, you'll be taken to the segment BELOW the one that causes problems.

2) cut paste it into a word document, the offending character will appear (in my case a square, I suppose this has to do with some sort of encoding). Delete it in the Word document, then copy paste back to your target. It works!
I had the same problem and I can confirm that this is the easiest way to effectively tackle the problem! I had erroneously typed underscore _ instead of the degree symbol ° and for some reason trados wouldn't like it. But the point is that the segment it suggests is the one immediately below the one with the problem in it.
Thank you Lamontagne!

I've corrupted the spellchecking file (CUSTOM.dic) in Trados Studio 2015

I've corrupted the spellchecker (CUSTOM.dic) in Trados Studio 2015.
To explain, one of my end clients is a German research institute, and I wanted to create a separate custom dictionary for the institute and add some names that keep appearing (e.g. the address, names of staff).
I don't remember what I did exactly, but now my CUSTOM.dic only works partially: I still have my previous entries, but I can't add new entries "on the fly" while running a spellcheck on a project - the Add button is greyed out in my version of Studio.
Can anyone assist by sharing a screenshot of the following file: customdictionary_config.xml
Location: C:\Users\{your username}\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SpellChecker
Here is a screenshot of my corrupt xml:

For all that I know, the custom dictionary is a regular text document that you can open in notepad or regular txt editor.
Did you do basic troubleshooting like restarting Studio?

Post title: Maybe with a partial File restore from the Windows Restore system?

Hello Daisy,
I don't know the reason of the corruption, the screenshot shows no entires stored, so I guess all has been overwritten somehow.
If your OS is Windows, the fastest way to restore a previous version of a file is:
Navigate to the folder Spellchecker, right-click on it and go in Properties; now chose 'Old versions' ('Vorgängerversion' in German). A window will popup showing this folder at different previous dates. Open it, and chose one older version of the file CUSTOM.dic and copy it back.

This may not work if Windows didn't create a restore point old enough to pick up an older version of your file, but generally Windows does automatic restores at regular intervalls.

I hope this helps you,
Mike

The shortcut should do : TAB, ENTER, then CTRL + ENTER
