Post title: File names

Thanks but unfortunately, it won't work....once the files have been merged and translated, I need to split them and retain the orginal file names and content.
For example
file1.rtf
Text=This is the house
file2.rtf
Text=This is the red house

The merged file must contain

This is the house
This is the red house

With some indications of the original file names 'in hidden text, in columns, whatever matching the corresponding content

Let's say the translation of the merged file is
Ceci est la maison
Ceci est la maison rouge

After the translation is done and completed in Studio, the merged and translated file must be processed again and give

file1.rtf
Text=Ceci est la maison
file2.rtf
Text=Ceci est la maison rouge

Post title: Should work within Trados

I don't know which version of Trados you use, but I 'virtually' merge files like this in Studio 2017:

1. Create a project with all the files you need in Trados
2. In the files view, select all the files.
3. Hit enter

This should open all files and present them in the editor window as if it was one big file. When you look back in the files view you'll see that all files are still there.

Maybe you already know this and can't perform this operation due to the large number of files. You say it takes ages to add thousands of files in Trados. How many files are we talking about here? I have never tried this with thousands of files, but I can't see why this should be a problem.

XTM and Trados Studio 2017 or MemoQ in Trados

Dear all,
I have this XTM-based client who really does not care what software I use or if I work online or offline. However, when I download these packages I seem to be able to solely work in MemoQ but would so much rather work in Trados. I have found information on how to convert things the from Trados into MemoQ but have not discovered either the other way around nor a way to use XTM in Trados and then generate the appropriate target files for that format.

Does anyone know? Great many thanks!

In theory, you can generate TIPP package in XTM, download it and save it on your computer. Then open TIPP with memoQ and a project will be created that contains one or more files to translate. Then in the Translations pane in memoQ you can right click on a file and select 'Export bilingual'. In the next screen uncheck the corresponding boxes in order to create a plain memoQ xliff file. See the screenshot below.

Save the plain memoQ xliff file on your computer and rename its extension to *.xls, that is, replace .mqxliff with .xls
Open the renamed file in Studio as usual, translate and export as usual. Rename the xls file to mqxliff and import it to memoQ as usual. QA the translation and export as TIPP package. Upload the TIPP to XTM. QA the translation and deliver.

XTM can export pretty well-behaved XLIFF files. Have you tried importing those in Trados?

Dear Endre,
The client's server setup allows me only to download the files as .tipp files and Trados won't read those. Once I have downloaded them they even already show up in my directory with the MemoQ icon. Therefore, maybe the way to go is in fact, as described by Andrej, to use MemoQ as "conversion tool" - interesting will then be how to get Trados to spit out those .tipp files or maybe I will need to re-convert again in MemoQ... making the use of MemoQ for this project seem easier than Trados.
Perhaps there is an app for converting precisely these files, I haven't had time to research this yet though, but will surely post again if I find something useful :)
Great many thanks!

After translating an xlf file (the extension must indeed be .xlf, not .xls as in my previous post, sorry) in Studio, no conversion is necessary as Studio will export the file in that very format. Just change the extension back to mqxliff and import the Studio-translated file into memoQ again in the same project.

Funny, I see two export options in XTM's file manager, XLIFF and XTM Excel (see screenshot), but no TIPP. Maybe you could talk to your client about that?

SDL Trados 2017 does not create a project

Hello,

A bit over a month ago I bought the newest Trados 2017. In the beginning everything was going fine, I completed three big projects without any trouble. This week it stopped creating a project.
I choose Translate a Single File, than the language pair and then nothing happens. Instead of visualising the window where I can select TMs for my project in the specified language pair, I see a gray screen and Trados does not allow me to go on with the project. It happened already in two projects, I had to ask my colleague to create a project in Studio 2014, which I imported into Studio 2017 and assigned the TMs and termbases later.
Anybody any ideas how I can overcome this? Or why it might not be working? Thanks.

"Translate a Single File" does not create a project, actually. To create a project you should choose File - New - New project.

On the first page of the single-file project creation wizard, you need to select a different target language and then the one you want. Weird quirk, but I've seen it happen.

However, the latest update seems to have fixed this. So, update to the latest version and check again.

Running an installation repair will not have any impact on your project files, TMs or TBs.
A reason of this may be that you have installed another Trados on another system, in this case you must 'Return a license' within the licensing system (you cannot use both versions).
I have done a repair installation, (twice), but that did not help: I am still getting the Invalid query error message and cannot open Studio 2015.

It is now a year since I moved Studio from my old computer to this one, and until yesterday Studio 2015 has worked perfectly.

It seems that my license is not recognised, but I don't understand how I can correct this, as I don't have access to the software.

I urgently need help!

Post title: Similar problem in Studio 2017

I checked my license status on the SDL license web site, and it looked quite normal. But I saw that I had an upgrade license to Studio 2017 (I had bought and downloaded the installation package, but not installed it yet), so I installed Studio 2017 and upgraded the license.

The installation worked smoothly, and the license seemed to work – but when I then should update Studio 2017 to the current version, the problem started again – the same error message, but with a partly different content:

It seems that the license still is not recognised correctly, and it is impossible to start Studio 2017! ¨

What can I do?? I NEED HELP!

Ohter than this, (it's saturday so the support may be asleep until monday), if you have 2 different versions installed you should be able to use 1 of them but not both. If I understand well you have Studio 2015 installed somewhere and now the version 2017 installed somewhere; in this case you should be able to run the 2017 version but not the 2015. Just open your projects with the 2017 version by navigating to the project folder of the 2015 version, or copy past your projects into:

\Documents\Studio 2017\Projects

Another possibility is to delete the Trados settings by navigating in the ProgramData or Appdata\Local\SDL folder, but I don't know if this helps.
