The site [url removed] no longer exists -- it was for a pirate version of Wordfast.

The original question from 2009 was for a free version of Trados. The only free versions of Trados are torrented (pirated) versions. A replier tried to indicate other programs that he believed are similar to Trados, but in actual fact none of the programs mentioned (OmegaT, Across, Wordfast) are similar to Trados.

The reason I ask is because I've come across some PMs who create an empty TM to mark up internal fuzzy matches to discount the price of a job by considering no matches (as there is non match until I've translated it) fuzzy matches.

Do you think this is a professional way of using a CAT tool?

I wrote from a company which also suffers what you say, but from our clients. I want to mark internal fuzzies in order to be properly paid.

You can check the option 'Report internal fuzzy match leverage' under Batch processing -> Analyze files (Studio 2015).

I completely object to this function, but in the race to the bottom translation agencies will do anything (and probably raise their margins by unchecking this option when analyzing files for their quote for the end customer).

I've upgraded Studio from 2014 to 2015. When I open a package in Studio 2015, I get a warning that the termbase couldn't be opened and then: General massive catastrophic system failure (very impressive!). After that, I cannot run QA (it's greyed out).

When I open the same package in Studio 2014 there are no problems.

In Studio 2015 I have to remove the termbase via the project settings.

To get technical support, I've logged in to: [url removed]

Question: Where should I click in order to communicate directly with the support department?

I'm using Safari, latest version, in case that's relevant.

Till sofar, but before you decide to upgrade, have a look at my thread (Windows 10), which I started about this subject.

It looks that upgrading from W8.1 is OK, but from W7 people encountered a lot of problems, so much, that I decided only to upgrade my W8.1 laptop, not my W7 desktop.

Hello Emma,

I have had a quick reply from an SDL Technician in the the SDL community forum. You say that you need to export the list from AutoText but if you don't have a list, you need to add a few entries just to be able to export something. In Notepad ++ you can add the entries but only like so on the following lines:
empty line
language code
your entries.
You can add you entries from any list into this *.autoText.
You cannot simply import any txt file. That didn't work when I tried it.

I've run an analysis of an Excel file within Trados Studio 2015 as usual. However, when I run the analysis on the same file, but on Trados Studio 2014, the WC differs. The settings are the same for both versions.

What's the issue behind?

Hello all:

I have created lots of return packages with subfolders before, but I don't know why this one is different.

On the SDL "Files" view, I click on the top level project name and the File list pane shows the files on that top level. I select all those files. When I click on the "Create Return Package" icon, only those files show up in the list of files to be included in the package, and I have no option to add the subfolder.

On previous projects, if I clicked on the top level I could click on "Create Return Package" and all the files would be selected for the package. I don't know why if I don't select files, the Icon to create return package is grayed out.

If I click on the subfolder and select all the files there, I get the reverse situation. All the files in the subfolder appear in the list of files to add to the package, and I have no way to add the files on the top level.

I appreciate your help. This has to be something really stupid that I'm missing.

I knew it was something stupid. I had not seen the checkmark "Include subfolders" that appears below the project tree. I marked it, and now all the files appear on the file list pane, so I can create my return package.

I feel a bit dumb, but glad I figured it out.

Hello all,

I am running into an error when trying to import a TMX TM exported from memoQ to a Trados TM. I am unable to open the TMX TM exported from memoQ in Trados. When I try to open it, I am getting an error that says:

The translation memory ________, could not be loaded: 'Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 40.'

When I open the TMX TM using Notepad and find line 1, position 40, what I'm seeing there is a vertical rectangle shaped character between the and . I can remove that character, and then try to open the TMX TM in Trados again, but the rectangles are throughout the file between the source and target, so when I try to open the TM again in Trados, it just flags the next occurrence of that issue.

Has anyone seen this before? My understanding is that memoQ is supposed to be almost fully compatible with Trados, so I'm not understanding why I'm getting this error when trying to open a TMX from memoQ. Is there a setting for memoQ TMs that I should have selected to avoid these rectangles being populated into a file, and are these even the cause of this error?

I have been using Studio 2015 for 3 months, and suddenly since this morning I cannot create a return package. Same problem as mentioned above, the window in which I should be able to choose which files to include is completely blank.
Has anyone else been experiencing this problem ?

I have exactly the same problem. I am running Trados 2011 on Windows 8.1.

Was working fine yesterday. Today, I can't even open the software.

I found the below on " [url removed] "

Click Start > Run...
Type: services.msc
The Services dialog will open.
Scroll in the list to:
Event Log
Windows Management Instrumentation
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Right-click on Event Log service name and choose Start.
Repeat this with the service Windows Management Instrumentation and Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
Now close the Service dialog and start SDL Trados Studio again. The error should be fixed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, Event Log, Windows Management Instrumentation and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) are all running. I restarted Event Log, tried to restart Windows Management Instrumentation but failed for some reason. I'm not allowed to start/stop or restart Remote Procedure (RPC) as all options are grayed-out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have a deadline which is running out.

The mentioned site was run by the italian company [url removed] The version they made available was WordFast 3.35x and it was not a pirated version, but a free version quite outdated for that time.

I want to make clear that I didn't (and don't) recommend pirated software.

Back in [b][u]2009[/u][/b] my post read:

[i]There are [b]several other alternatives in the market able to emulate and even surpass the TRADOS functions and to handle TRADOS files[/b], without the price tag and the recurrent actualizations.[/i]

I have enough time in this trade to know what is similar to Trados and what is not. It is clear that at that time I was mentioning alternatives to TRADOS, not look-alikes.

Nowadays, I would suggest MateCAT as a very good alternative to TRADOS, being free, online, and able to handle its proprietary formats (sdlxliff, ttx).

Hi Stuart,

Sorry to hear you are having problems.
Unfortunately some Windows updates have caused a few problems.
As I can see from your account you recently activated your license so I do believe this is an update issue.
Please reboot your PC- ensuring you log in as administrator- then go to Windows Control Panel search for Studio 2011- RIGHT CLICK- RUN as Administrator- RUN REPAIR.
Please note that certain AV (anti virus providers) will often quarantine perfectly safe files which can then cause a corruption.
Therefore I advise you before running the repair- to close all other programs including email etc. then temporarily disable your AV
then run the repair.

Please let me know how you get on.
