Just drag and drop your *.xml TB, as converted from memoQ, into SDL Glossary Converter ( )
It will automatically create an sdltb file in the same folder.

...for the alignment purposes. You align texts for TM to be able to find a hit when you translate. It doesn't matter whether it is bold or not. The content is important, the appearance is irrelevant.

Thanks Stepan,

You're right, I was clearly having a can't-see-the-wood-for-the-trees moment!

I've since discovered that if I do need to edit the target text I just do it in a separate step in the editor after I've finished the alignment.

What is the best way to export a SDL Multiterm termbase for use in MemoQ?

What is the best way to export a SDL Multiterm termbase for use in MemoQ?

Should I use Multiterm Convert or a tool like Glossary Converter? I've used Glossary Converter earlier, long time ago, and it worked fine. Now it crashes as soon as I try to load the termbase files though (it's an old version of Glossary Converter).

So I have the Multiterm termbases ready-made already, just need to be able to use them in MemoQ also (I use both CAT tools).

I tried the Export function in SDL Multiterm Desktop, but I get a bit confused about the Save as, don't know which file to choose.

I recommend getting Glossary Converter to work, exporting to TBX, and then importing into a memoQ termbase.

Actually having to translate documents into 2 languages is not so uncommon as stated here. It is actually quite common in bilingual countries such as Belgium and Catalonia. I have proposed this idea to SDL and I would love to get your votes:

Also, new larger screens now allow for such a functionality!
Thanks for your vote!

I am wondering if it is possible to translate a document to two target languages at the same time? Normally we have three columns under Editor, one is the source, one is the segment status, and the other one is the target. I wonder if I can add one more column for the second target translation next to the target column?
Thank you in advance!
I am not sure if it's normally a good idea to translate into two target languages simultaneous. The translator has to switch between the two all the time, which includes the risk that one translation will influence the translation into the other. At least for the two main languages in Norway, Bokmål and Nynorsk, there is a great danger here since they are quite close, but still have their separate grammar.

So I would rather advice translating into one language at a time.

I don't know how it is with Studio, but Dejavu allows one to have two projects open at the same time in separate windows. That way one can look at one project while working on the other if one wants to check what one chose in one language while working on the other. But switching back and forth between two separate languages (multitasking) seems not a good idea for most of us.

You can just clean them out manually in a normal text editor like Notepad++

Studio 2019 doesn't find matches in the TM | Easy fix

I was having the same problem, and found the following solution:

Make sure the correct TM is selected under Project Settings (and that the Update box is ticked).
Go to Batch Tasks > Update Main Translation Memories to have your translation populated to the TM.

IMPORTANT: The Update Project Translation Memories option did not solve the problem, only the Update Main Translation Memories.

Hope this helps!

Trados Studio 2019: unwanted automatic pretranslation when adding files

Poster: Katja Heimann-Kiefer

Hi all,

while I had purchased the updated to Studio 2019 quite a while ago already, it is only now in January that I am actually making the switch from 2017 and am taking the first steps.

So I added a new source file to a project I was working on. I simply added the file, nothing more. And just by adding the file Studio not only created a target copy and analysed the file (as it used to do) - but also applied Perfect Matches and pretranslated the files.

I don't want to get my new files automatically pretranslated. I want to control myself what is happening with my files. I set "analyse only" as my standard workflow. This behaviour is a clear violation of what I set, and I'm not even getting a choice of what is going to happen!

How can I change this unwanted behaviour?

Grateful for any tips:
Katja

When adding the files, instead of clicking on the "Add files" option in the context menu, wait a bit until the submenu appears and click on "Add files and run custom batch tasks". This will have the same effect as in previous Studio versions.

Hi Roy,

thank you very much, that's a lot better!

(Now it would be nice if the suggested task sequence could default to the one that I actually set as default task sequence in the program options - that would save me always having to select my standard task sequence. But I suppose we shouldn't ask for too much ...)

Thanks again,
Katja

Dear Katja,

I think it's possible to edit and create a task sequence, and then select it in Options > Default task sequence, but my licence does not have the feature, check here:

Post title: Yes, but ...

Hi Roy,

yes, you can select a default task sequence. I did that. But my point was that the "Add files" step we talked about earlier does not use that default sequence.

As for creating custom sequences: You can do that while you haven't activated your license and while your Studio version is running in demo mode. Even after you have activated your license you can return it in your online SDL account, then you revert to demo mode and custom task sequences become available - BUT: I am not sure whether this still works once your original 30 days demo period have expired! So if you have been using Studio for a longer time, try that at your own risk.

Best regards
Katja
