This used to happen to me as well, before I reinstalled Windows (for non-related reasons). At the time when I had this behaviour, I simply taught myself to open SDLXLIFF files and packages the long way: run Trados, then use File > Open or File > New.

Hi all, I'm a bit baffled here and hoping you can help.

I do a lot of reviewing of test translations for a company, today I've come across something I've never seen before.

There are multiple segments reported as "Target confirmed without prior editing". These segments show a TM match result of "0%". So the target was clearly auto-populated - but from where? The content is not in the TM.

There is a TM included with the project. Rather than reporting that the match was found in this named TM (which it wouldn't be, as it is supplied empty, as it's a test translation), when I hover over the match it says "Origin: Translation Memory" and "Provider: Translation Memory".

There are also several other similar segments, which say "Origin: Auto-propagated" and "Provider: Propagated". These segments appear only once in the file.

How has the translator achieved this? Obviously, I am trying to rule out the use of MT here.

Any advice gratefully appreciated!

I'm tasked with translating a text that has custom markup which uses different highlight colors and is partly hidden with no simple rules as to what is hidden and what is not. I need to preserve the markup as is, including the hidden parts, and therefore cannot simply hide and then unhide it all. How can I quickly prepare the document for translation, excluding the markup?

Trados' bilingual files are simply a flavor of XML, so it's very easy to open them up in a text editor (Notepad) and change any and all segments into having whatever status and origin you prefer, or to hide any traces of MT used. You can modify absolutely everything, including the "origin", "conf" status, match "percent", "created_on", "created_by" and any other info you can actually see in Trados.

Most of the time however, when you have segments with, let's say, "unconventional" or conflicting statuses, it usually means that the translator was CAT hopping, i.e., using a different CAT or third-party tool to process and translate the sdlxliff files. This is definitely common if they like some other environment better and/or have a ton of resources already for a different tool and they are proficient enough to guarantee that processing them outside of Trados yields the same results.

So, in short, you can't rule out MT programmatically and you'll have to determine linguistically if something is amiss (although, if you can't tell by the end product, I personally feel this is a non-issue). However, I understand the trust between the vendor and the client is paramount and the translator would be shooting him/herself in the foot by using MT if it's specifically against a client requirement, not to mention it's ethically wrong to agree to some terms you have no intention to keep of course.

Could you change the markup, using Word's Find & Replace function, to something that the CAT tool can work with, then change it back to the original markup after translation?

Rossana, thank you! That makes sense.

It is in the client contract that MT shall not be used (sensitive information they don't want passed to external servers). Though I do agree - I have no objection to a good result achieved with careful use of MT. But I do understand the client's requirement.

I had just never seen this before. Now it makes sense, how this may have happened!

I declare this resolved as it turns out that there is no actual hidden text in the markup despite the grey check mark in the Font window that suggested otherwise. No hidden text can be found using the Search & Replace window.

I just wanted to add a voice to this discussion. I normally don't use Trados, but sometimes I have clients that want me to.

Being naive, I went for the latest version so am now using Studio 2019 (freelance). I have taken note of the comments on dramatic loss of speed and noticed that Trados was horribly slow. So, to check whether this was a Windows problem, I loaded the same packages in Transit NXT. It's no problem these days to cross-load packages from one CAT tool in another.

I left both programs open simultaneously and worked on both alternately to see where the hiccups were. The TM/ref. files and dictionaries I used were the same.
Lo' and behold - Transit shot through it like lightning and Trados exhibited all the problems hundreds of users have been reporting in many forums on the web. Whether moving to the next segment, manually saving the file (every 3-5 minutes), exporting the finished translation 10 pages of Word or whatever.

So it is really not a Windows problem, nothing to do with AV, memory (my Parallels VM has 20 GB for Windows 10, of a total of 128 GB on an iMac Pro) or settings.

SDL need to take a long thoughtful look at what they're doing and start doing things right. Since Workbench days, they have tried to make Trados competitive (compared with MemoQ and Transit), but this is not the way to go.

I was asked to send bilingual files and clean files as deliverables.

After searching this forum, I now know that clean files can be created via "Batch Task">"Generate Target Translations".

However, I could not find any information on what bilingual files mean.

Are they those files that I can create via "Batch Task">"Export for Bilingual Review", or something else?

I hope somebody can help me understand what 'bilingual files" are and how to create them with Trados Studio.

I would appreciate any kind of advice.

The 'bilingual files' are just the files in the CAT tool format (ie. in SDL Studio the .sdlxliff files).

If your client sent you a project package then they would probably expect you to deliver a return package ('Create return package'). If they just sent you .sdlxliff files they would expect those back from you.

Thank you for your advice.

However, actually, I was given excel files and instructed to create a package for myself, so I did so.
Also, they said I should create bilingual files as they are not included in the package automatically...

I assume this may mean a bilingual file for review...

I assume they want the .sdlxliff file because that's what they need to update their TM. The 'Export for bilingual review' would only be of very limited use to your client.

But as always: If in doubt check with your client.

No, I suspect it's still what Thomas said. The "bilingual files" are the SDLXLIFF files. If you receive a forward package, the package will contain the SDLXLIFF files, but if you create the project yourself (using the original source files), then Trados will create the SDLXLIFF files.

I'm not sure what they mean by "package". Only users with the "professional" version of Trados can create packages from the original files. You probably have the "freelance" version, so you can open existing forward packages and create return packages, but you can't create return packages if you haven't received a corresponding forward package.

I was just wondering if it could be caused by the translator's using a different TM? I know some translators have their huge master monster TMs, or TMs for specific subject matters. Or would it be displayed differently?

It is possible - as it happens with quite a few localization projects - that the client wants to receive a bilingual Excel file. In this case, you can just generate the target file and paste the results to the source Excel file, so that the source and target are in two side-by-side columns.

ALL CATs support SDLXLIFF. Files could be translated in any of them.

Go to File-Options-Colors
Check if the 'Segment shading ratio' is set to leftmost position. If yes, move it to the right or press the 'Reset to Defaults' button in the lower left corner.

Thanks, but this doesn't seem to change anything. The (inactive) segments should be alternately white and grey, but all segments are still white. Reset to Defaults doesn't help either...

No, it has nothing to do with Excel. This term refers to sdlxliff that was mentioned above here by others. I just want to add on how to get it: once the translation is done, go to File - Advanced Save - Save copy as - Locate the folder where you expect to find your bilingual file.
If you have dozens of files, it would be easier to select all of them, with target language flag turned on, and go to Batch Tasks - Export files - select 'File version to export: Latest bilingual version'. This will create a folder containing all sdlxliff files from your project.
