Is there a way of deleting older versions of a file in Trados

Hi everyone,

I want to delete an entire translation (file) from a translation memory as we have made substantial changes to the file and want the new changes to be reflected and the old redundant sentences deleted. I thought I could do this with the alignment feature but when I run the updated file through Trados, the old sentences are still there and the new ones show as 95-99% match; hence, I would have to manually delete the segment and enter the new one, which would take way too long (it's a very long document with many changes).

Is there any way of deleting the contents of the old translation from the memory entirely?

Kindest regards! Isa

If you have your newer file (as edited) in sdlxliff format, then go to Project Settings => Language Pairs => All Language Pairs => Translation Memories and Automated Translation => highlight your TM and then press Import... => Add Files... => locate the above mentioned sdlxliff => Next => Next => check the 'Overwrite existing translation units' radio button => Finish

Note 1: By default, it is 'Add new translation units'. That is why Trados applies a penalty of 1% (for exactly same translations) or 2% (for same translations with different formatting or tags) to keep both translations as close to 100% match as possible. And that is why you see them as 99% or 98% matches.

Note 2: I am not sure if the 'Update' checkbox for the highlighted TM makes any difference for this operation, but check it just to be on the safe side.

I know about that trick, but the problem here is that there are 192 programs running on the background and I don't know which ones to turn off and which not. Programmes with names as igfx EM Module, LMSvc, Runtime Broker and many, many more. I have no idea where they stand for. They all sound like Chinese to me.

Like I stated before, I am just a user, not a 'technician'.

Paulo,
I believe by right clicking on "Batch Tasks", and then "Finalise", you will be able to have a "clean" version of your file (the original format of the file your client sent to you), as well as your "unclean" file, the file with sdl xliff extension.

The "Finalize" step performs two steps, namely it creates target translations and it updates the main TMs. So, you can use "Finalize" if you want to create target translations, but then you'll also be performing an additional step (update the main TMs). It is perfectly all right to just "Create Target Translations" by itself, without using "Finalize".

(By the way, I find the label "Finalize" to be confusing, because it causes only the main TMs to be updated and not the project TMs. This means that the project TMs will still contain outdated content after you used "Finalize", unless you also use the "Populate project translation memories" step.)

192 is a lot. Uninstalling programs you don't use may go some way to help with this, although the problem with "bloatware" is its creators will want to give it an ambiguous name so you can't tell it apart from important stuff. Using some kind of PC de-clutter program like CC cleaner might help.

Open a file. Upper line, choose "Advanced". At the left side you see "Protect Tags". It is grey marked, uncheck it, it will work almost miraculously. Having activated the editing of the source or not, doesn't play any role for this special extent.

Hi there,
Does anyone happen to know when SDL Trados Studio 2020 will be released?

I want to buy SDL Trados Studio but the price of the 2019 version is no longer discounted, so I might as well wait for the latest version.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jennie

If you check, you will se that SDL usually launches a new version every other year. So the next version due should be 2021, not 2020.

Hello, I just bought Trados 2019 and I installed the DeepL add-on. When I try to add the API key, I get this message: Could not load file or assembly 'Newtonsoft.Json, Version= [IP removed] , Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=30ad4fe6aeed' when connecting to Language Cloud or creating Package. Any ideas?

A similar problem from 2014 was attributed to a faulty .NET installation:

It's been almost two years that Trados 2019 was announced in April 2018. Since May 2018 it was available for pre-order and since July 2018 it was available for use.
If SDL plan to release 2021, then you've got just a few months to wait when they start announcing it. (My guess.)

How to import Memo-Q translations into a TM in Studio.

Poster: Jonathan Haerinck

We recently started collaborating with an external translation agency that uses Memo Q. I thought Memo Q and Studio were compatible. However, they sent me a translation as an mqxlz-file. As I do for other agencies using Studio, I tried to add the file via the Import function after selecting the appropriate TM. However, my PC didn't recognize the file. I then asked to send me a real xliff file. They sent me a file with the long 'mqxliff.xlf.mqliff' extension. I again tried to import via the Import function, but this worked neither.
However, I can open this type of file in the welcome menu after selecting translate as single document.
Now they sent me a 'mqxliff.xlf' file, which I can neither import.

What is the best way to import Memo Q translations into my TM's in Studio? What format do I have to ask the agency to deliver and how do I import them into my TM (and add my metadata)?

When you import a file to your TM, and you click the "Add files" button, you'll see a dropdown list next to the File Name field called "Supported import files", which tells you which file types you can import to a TM.

You can't import all kinds of XLIFF files. The only type of XLIFF file that you can import into a TM is an SDLXLIFF file. This means that if you want to import segments from another type of XLIFF file (e.g. MQXLIFF or XLF) or any other type of bilingual file that TM import does not support, you first have to convert it to SDLXLIFF. To do this, create a new project and load the files into that project as if they are source files. Trados will then create SDLXLIFF files based on those files, and you can then import those SDLXLIFF files into your TM.

The MQXLZ file is a zip file with MQXLIFF files inside it. If you don't know how to unzip such a zip file that doesn't have a "zip" file extension, I recommend 7-zip.

(Renaming a non-Trados XLIFF file to SDLXLIFF doesn't work either, because Trados uses the SDLXLIFF file's specific, proprietary segment statuses when doing the TM import.)
