Your solution is probably better than mine, since I in such cases usually use Ctr+Insert to copy source to target and then edit target accordingly.

(In actual fact I do my translation work in Dejavu, which copies links from source to target automatically so that I don't have to think more about it.)

...I shall try your suggestion Natalie. Does the fact that you don't mention emails mean that it is not possible have emails as recognised tokens?

Thanks,

Source and (confirmed) target segments both contain tags (bold) but TM does not update with these tags:
TM simply applies a penalty for missing formatting, but refuses to update with the new tags

Tried creating several (new) translation memories but to no avail.

Thanks for any help.

Emails are copied exactly as URLs.

In my case this works perfectly well. I have just finished a rather long translation containing plenty of links and email addresses, and all of them were copied to the target text automatically. So all you need is just looking through all this stuff to be sure that everything is correct.

Working with Trados, need a two-column Word doc

Dear all,

my client requested me to create a two-column Word file to work on.
Basically I have a few files to translate and my client needs the translation inserted in two columns.

Is there a tool simplifying this process?
I have Trados 2014. Is there a straightforward function there?
Of course I have no will to create tables from scratch in Word. That would be bothersome and time-consuming.

Thank you very much in advance.
Your help will be much appreciated.

Have you tried simply selecting the following menu options (valid for Office 365***):

Layout - Columns - Two

You can just copy and paster your source text into Word, and then apply the formatting.

This will be a pretty brute force approach, so you will then probably need to define the styles that you require.

Hope that helps

*** Should be the same in older versions

Hi,

Try importing your source file into Studio or any other CAT tool, even a trial version will do, and export the file as a two-column Word/rtf file for translation in MS Word.

monolingual text formatted in two columns, or source in one column and target in the other? I suppose the latter. I don't use Trados, but what I would do is, I would transform the source text (in Word) into a table. Then I would use CAT on it, and then create a Word document with a 2-column table and copy the source into one and the trans into the other. Seems complicated, but it is quite fast and it's difficult to get it wrong.

First, if it isn't already, I convert the source text to a table; then I adjust the width of the rsulting single column to be about half my screen width, so that I can then copy-&-paste the entire column next to itself.
Then I select and set the 'source (probably left-hand) column to the untranslatable attribute for my particular CAT tool, and then translate as normal (of course, only the right-hand column will translate.
This is quite handy, as you always have the 'clean' source text just alongside, so can easily copy-&-paste from that if you need to, which is sometimes easier than copying from the source segment.

Aftare clean-up at the end, you can if necessary select the left-hand 'source' column and remove the 'do not translate' attribute; though in many cases, this is not necessary.

Hello everyone,

Is there any way to type French symbols in Trados 2011 with ctrl shortcuts? E. g., ctrl + ` and then "a" gives an à. Might be some sort of a plugin?

Thanks.

How to merge segments using 'project settings'?

Hi,

I'm currently doing the training for SDL Trados and the instructions have asked me to merge two segments for a sample PDF file. I've used the 'highlight, right click + select merge segments'. However, these instructions ask us to go into 'project settings' and 'allow source editing' and 'enable merging segments across paragraphs'. I'v selected both but still cannot merge the segments. Any ideas?

Thank you

It usually is better to fix the pdf in Word before importing rather than fiddling with merging segments in Studio.

I suspect the problem is a hard paragraph shift that is the culprit for you, which Studio may not allow to be merged.

Therefore, better to remove the line shift in Word first.

I wanted to delete a word from the dictionary and opened the CUSTOM.txt file where you can find the list. As the changes where not reflecting in Trados (2015), I tried deleting the file (saving it first in other folder) and then pasting it again to its original folder. Now the dictionary recognizes the words I already have in it, but the option to add new words is always inactive, and this is catastrophic for me.

Any ideas, apart from uninstalling and reinstalling Studio?

Thank you very much in advance!

Could you please give a more step by step overview of what you do, so it will be easier for us to see where you may go wrong?

You cannot save either source or target, since it's not in the original format - you have to export the translated document to get it in the same format as the source document.
