Studio 2017: "Cannot edit revised content when review mode is off" ? | Turn Track Changes on

I had a similar situation with Studio 2015 a few days ago. I did some editing to a document with Track Changes on. Later I was not able to edit newly inserted content and was getting the same error message "Cannot edit revised content..." The problem was solved by turning Track Changes back on. Apparently this is what this obscure error message is trying to tell.

Yes that was it, at some point I have actually disabled tracked changes (instead of chosing the final view). Re-opening the document has turn them on automatically. In the future I'll know that I must keep them on. Thank you very much for the feedback!

Have a nice day!

Hello,
Locked segments do not appear in the settings for updating main TMs. Are they included automatically, or not included when running this batch task?
If they are included, is there a way to avoid this?

One way or the other, it would be useful I think to add this option in the settings.

Thanks

Hi folks,

Some of you may not like MT, but DeepL is the best show in town. It's now available via their website for integration into Trados for a monthly fee.

BTW I am also using DeepL on FoundCAT, my own CAT tool which I use for helping students learn foreign languages. You can try out different MT offers for free via FoundCAT here:

FoundCAT is browser-based and you will need to register. At the moment only English & German are available as source languages. More will follow with this open source project.

Happy translating!

Gary

I've had a 2007 license that went 'inactive' at some point after an upgrade. I haven't even noticed that at first, and it did continue to work fine on a laptop. Now's the time for a system upgrade, and obviously, this licensed version cannot be reinstalled.
The SDL store does not seem to offer an option to buy an old Trados/SDLX license; only Studio now. But I still
have work coming in fom clients in TTXs and ITDs, so - any idea where I can buy a 2007 license in 2018?
Thanks!

Studio treats old file formats perfectly well: you work with them in Studio and then just save as target and return to the client as ttx or itd.

But Studio doesn't have the better top/bottom view of source and translation...just imagine how much your eyes move in Studio...
I still have my Tageditor license at SDL, it has survived many computer upgrades

Post title: This problem has frustrated me for years

I even asked about it at the Trados Roadshow in New York last fall.

Then I was still using Studio 2014.

The speaker pretended not to know anything about it, said she came in at 2015, but that, yes, of course, this was no longer an issue with Studio 2017.

Well I'm there now. Studio 2017. Same problem.

It occurs, as far as I can tell, when the subgroup appears under the main TM.

It looks roughly like this:

Master-Finance DE-GB...sdltm
-> Master-Finance DE-GB...sdltm (but this appears in a box with dotted lines)

Whenever this sub-group appears, your TM is no longer updating. As far as I can tell, this subgroup appears any time a new file is loaded to a set-up project. Effectively making it pointless to set up projects where you can just drag new files into them.

Very disappointing from trados.

Your workaround with AnyTM is interesting.

Well, "perfectly well" is an overestimate.

I just tried opening a TTX file in Trados 2015, and immediately I see two issues:
1. Trados 2015 did not ask for an INI file, even though there is an INI file associated with this particular TTX file, which means that Trados 2015 won't display the file correctly.
2. Trados 2015 shows only the translatable text, but no context. The TTX file viewed in TagEditor shows useful context for all translatable text, but Trados 2015 shows only the translatable text.

Compare the view in TagEditor with the view in Trados 2015:

In this particular case, it is clear that the text "Enrolment Confirmation" should not be taken as context for the text "Sent when an assessment..." even though the one segment appears immediately before the other in Trados 2015, but what if the text did appear to make sense as context? The translator using Trados 2015 might/would have translated the second segment based on the assumed context provided by the first segment.

When opening the file in TagEditor, it is clear that the first segment in Trados 2015 is NOT context for the second segment. And, in fact, TagEditor shows the actual correct context for the segment.

This is a well-known problem with extraction-only type CAT tools such as Trados 2009+, MemoQ, WFP/WFA, etc -- context contained in untranslatable text within the file is not displayed to the translator.

I made one small change to the TTX file in Trados 2015 and then generated an export TTX file to see what was changed. What I found was telling:
1. At several segments (which I did not edit), Trados 2015 changed the target language code. This is the biggest and most problematic issue.
2. Trados 2015 escaped certain characters throughout the file (e.g. apostrophes and quotes). This is still valid XML, but we don't know what kind of a parser the client uses -- it may be one that treats cleartext character entities as literal text.
3. Trados 2015 added extra information to TUs that were altered. For example, <Tu MatchPercent="100"> was changed to <Tu Origin="batch100" MatchPercent="100">, even though batch100 is not a defined TU origin in the original file. This change did not seem to bother TagEditor, but it is worth noting.
All these issues will also affect clients who use document comparison tools for QA, as it will flag segments as edits even though the translator did not edit them.

Agreed. Those "sub-groups" as you call them are project TMs.

Another problem might be a bug that I discovered a few years ago which is still an issue in Studio 2017: For certain TMs, if they have fields, these fields need to be completed in order to update the TM. Go to Project Settings > Translation Memory > Update and check if there are any fields. If yes, add values to those fields. Then try updating the TM and see if that works.

Hello,

I am currently experiencing the exact same issue with my license. I needed to reinstall Trados after some time on a new computer. Installation goes smoothly, but it goes south when I try to activate. Online activation fails saying that the license is not supported and offline activation says that Trados 2011 is activated (but it still does not work).

I do not really need to upgrade right now and I would like to be able to use the license that I purchase...
Can anyone help with this?

Cheers

Could you add "border line" for segments?

Dear SDL support,

I work with Trados Studio 2017.

Is that possible for you to give an option to use a border line between the current segment and the subsequent one?

The reason is that when translating I prefer to have white background color for all segments so that I can easily detect any typos with that red underline. Besides, it's easy in the eyes too if you work all day. So, I set the "segment shading ratio" to the lowest.

However, I think it will be much more convenient if I am able to easily differentiate between the two segments if you have "border line" feature.

Is there a way for me to do that? Or could you introduce it in your next update?

Many thanks.

In my case, Workbench only cleans with the help of an extra macro and TagEditor doesn't clean at all.

And while we're at it, I also need to be able to change the color and thickness of the cursor.

You know, with such white segment background, an option for me to be able to set my cursor to a thick colored one would be great.

Thanks
