Maybe this might be useful for anyone as dumb as I am who has the same problem.
When trying to confirm a segment with the shortcut keys Ctrl + Enter (as in the past with Trados Studio 2011), it wouldn't work. I looked for the relevant icon and the only one I could see was "Select next match". This didn't quite seem right but I couldn't see anything else. I know that the relevant icon was pretty prominent on the old Trados toolbar that could be used with MS Word, so I expected to find it. I simply assumed there was a problem with the newly installed software.
Quite by chance I had another document open in Trados Studio the other day and I clicked on the "Translation" menu and there I could indeed confirm a segment and I then looked for the shortcut which is now Ctrl + Alt + Enter. This must have been changed with the latest service pack
Thank you Emma for your suggestions.
