Poster: James Hodges

I have just started work on a new PowerPoint job. Before going too far, however, I decided to check if it would preview correctly. I hit the preview button and only got the message shown below. The issue only seems to impact the specific PowerPoint file. I've successfully previewed others. Any ideas? Moreover, it is possible to the destination of the preview file and get around this issue?

The file reference Studio is trying to access points to the recycle bin. As the bin contents are not programmatically accessible, you need to restore that file from the bin first, and then access it at the original location where it was before deletion. Now, the question is whether this file is a part of your project or it is only referenced indirectly. In the latter case, you may have to do some digging to find the file/folder reference you need to adjust.

Unable to enter foreign chars with Alt+Code and Numeric Pad

Hi! For years, and in all environments I have been working (even under Trados 7.5!), I have been able to enter French accented characters (e.g. é, à, ç, è, or any other "foreign" characters, such as umlauts, etc.) using a US keyboard, by holding the Alt key down and keying in a three--or more--letter code, Num Lock being activated, just as I have done in this paragraph, here above.
This allows to use any US keyboard to input foreign languages in all environments. I am certain many of you are aware of this.
I upgraded to SDL Trados Studio 2015 in March (2016), and started using it under Windows 10 a few months ago. No problem to input my French translations for some time. Then, about two months ago--an error message appeared for the first time when I was midway through a large XLIFF file and was inputting French language segments: Cannot access a disposed object. Object name: 'UltraToolbarsDockArea'. This only happens in Studio. This 'feature' has continued to appear to this day. Sometimes, I can start writing in a file for several minutes (15, 30 min), and it will be possible to input foreign characters in the usual manner. Then, as if some limit were suddenly reached, it is impossible to input them again, and the message appears. I can close the file, open it again, and I am allowed a few inputs, then the message pops up after a few minutes again. This is a Show Stopper, as it prevents me from writing my own language in a fairly popular CAT tool using a normal US keyboard; I live in the US, and need to access several different computers. Using a French keyboard is not an option.
I have seen posts by at least two other translators regarding this very same issue--no solution was offered to them that I have seen, or that I know of.
Solution, anyone? Has anyone else encountered this error for the same reason? (Cannot access a disposed object. Object name: 'UltraToolbarsDockArea'); does anyone at SDL have a constructive answer? A solution? Thanks!

Hello Michel,

I cannot help you resolve the Studio problem but maybe you should consider installing the Canadian Multilingual Standard keyboard under French (Canada) input language as an option. You'll learn very quickly where the accented letters are.

Nevertheless, I hope a more savvy colleague answers your question.

Thank you Ekaterina! Unfortunately, installing any other keyboard than a US standard QWERTY is not a practical option... But thank you for informing me (and the readers of this forum) about the existence of Canadian QWERTY keyboards, easily allowing the input of French characters... Unfortunately, here in the US, there are no such keyboards at the customer sites where I need to go and input my "foreign" characters. I still would like to know why the newer versions of Studio balk at the use of Alt+Numeric Pad codes.

Concordance window doesn't work in Studio 2011

This is driving me crackers, and I'm pretty sure I've been through all the tabs and options to look for a way to restore it.

I lost my concordance window briefly, but retrieved it by resetting the upper windows above the segment panes. Now, however, the Concordance pane just sits there with an "i" information button, saying the equivalent of "Write the text to be searched", but doesn't let me write anything in there.

The only options are Close, or the Pin/Unpin toggle, which doesn't solve anything. How can I look for sections of text?

Thanks.

One of the latest functions of Windows is portable Windows 10, that is, you install Windows 10 on an external USB harddrive and run on any modern PC flawlessly (installation requires special PC hardware/software knowledge). I "tried" running Windows 10 with Trados 2015 on 4 different configuration PCs and they were compatible up to date.

Hi all,

I also had this issue with one of my linguists once I created her a SDL Studio 2009 package.
She has SDL Studio 2014 SP2 and she encountered the same error as described in this thread.
The solution that worked in this case is to "Create Project Package" and not "Create Studio 2009 Package".
So If you are a linguist, then ask your client to create the package like above.

And if you are a SLV/MLV, then you need to ensure the linguist version and create the package accordingly.

Let me if it works for you now.

Good Luck.

Is it possible to get the same UI as in Studio 2014 in Studio 2015 in the translation view?

I still very much prefer the UI layout I had in Studio 2014 before the one in Studio 2015 primarily because the green checkmarks for confirmed segments were much bigger in Studio 2014 so I immediately could see whether a segment was confirmed or not. In Studio 2015, I often hesitate as to whether a segment has been confirmed or not due to the smaller size on the green checkmarks and slicker layout.

This is quite a big issue for me, because if I can I continue to use Studio 2014 for my jobs as I feel more comfortable with the UI in the translation view there.

So I wonder if there is any way to change this (any setting) in Studio 2015, just for the translation view?

Judging by all your comments this only seems to happen with Excel files. One possible explanation might be that you exceeded the length restriction for the names of the Excel tabs (31 characters), although I'm not sure if that's the problem that leads exactly to this error message. Something you may want to look out for though.

Extracting most frequent terms from source files in Trados project | How about a corpus tool like AntConc or Sketch Engine?

Post title: How about a corpus tool like AntConc or Sketch Engine?

Hi Helen,

This answer might be a couple of weeks too late, but I wanted to mention the tools I've used to do something similar. AntConc is the one I've used the most, and it's freeware - there's a quick guide here and you can download the tool from [url removed] Briefly, I convert the source files to simple TXT and load them into AntConc, then use the 'Word List' function to sort all the individual words by frequency (then copy and paste the results into e.g. Excel and manually delete the "obvious" words/rows to leave genuine key terms only), and then use the 'Clusters/N-grams' function to identify the frequently-occurring phrases rather than individual words, and do the same again (copy/paste to Excel and delete the irrelevant phrases). Then I add translations for any key terms/phrases I want to include, and use either the SDL Glossary Converter or Multiterm Convert to create a termbase. The process is a bit more manual and time-consuming than I'd like, but for big/repetitive projects I find that spending even an hour or two up front still saves time later.

I've also used Sketch Engine to a limited extent - I've barely scratched the surface but it's a brilliant tool. You'd need to take out a paid subscription and you have to upload the files you're working on (which may not be an option, of course). Both Sketch Engine and AntConc let you specify 'stoplists' of obvious terms that will be ignored, though I've only tried this in Sketch Engine. From my limited experience, extracting the genuine key terms/phrases is a lot quicker with Sketch Engine than with AntConc. Since both tools are designed for all kinds of corpus work, rather than being specifically for translators, there are plenty of functions that I haven't got my head round properly, but both could be worth a look. Hope this helps!

Hi experts,

I have Windows 7 and Trados Studio 2015.

I received a Trados package from one of my clients and sent him the translated sdlxliff file and the TM.

The client has written as follows:

“When it comes to TRADOS files, we kindly ask for the return package (the one that has a blue icon with an arrow) for us to move with finalizing the project and processing the file.

Could you send it as a “return package”

I am unable to figure it out. Could you please help me in this respect.

Thanks in anticipation.

Working with TXLF files within Studio 2015

An old client of mine switched platforms recently (after years of using SDLX/.itd files, which I could work on in Studio 2015) and now seems headed towards the Wordfast Pro/.txlf format. While I'm always open to the idea of learning a new translation software, I'm not quite sold on the usefulness of this switch nor on any advantage Wordfast might have over Studio 2015, and I'm wondering if there is any way to work with TXLF files in Studio 2015. I know there is a plugin to work with TXML files, but TXLF files won't work.

Thank you

When in the projects view, right click on the project you want to make a return package out of, then select "create return package", select a location to store it and... voila!

If you right click on the project (in the project window), it should give you the option "create return package". Simply click it, select where to save the file and you're done.

It's also in the menu and the ribbon somewhere. Shouldn't be to hard to find it.

It makes the workflow for your customer a bit easier.

I thank you for your kind reply. When I tried to do so, I found that Create Return Package is shown in drop down menu but it is disabled. This is perhaps due to the reason that I extracted the file from the package and translated it as an independent (single) file. I should perhaps use the same TM to translate it as a project file so as to enable me to use the "Create Return Package" command.

Thanks again for your valuable advice.

Yes Chopra,

I think you'll have to re-open the package and translate it using your TM. This may imply some additional work, but I guess it is the fastest way to be able to create a return package. Good luck!
