Quick Add New Term function - how does it work? | The window is auto-hiding

Post title: The window is auto-hiding

Hi Dan and Heloisa

You can't avoid having the window opening, but as it is set to auto-hide by default, it will - as Dan pointed out - retract as soon as you move your cursor out of it.

This is by purpose because it gives you the possibility to do a quick visual check on the result of the "Quick Add Term" process . If everything is OK, simply move your cursor out of the window and it will immediately close.

Post title: Why do you send the a TM?

Hi Martin

TM exports should be fully compatible between all versions of Studio, but the main question is "why you are doing this".

The proper way would be to send them your bilingual SDLXLIFF file, so they can import it into their TM (or open it in the Editor first for review if they wish to do so).

The problem is that a page is not a standard measurement. It can hold different numbers of characters depending on country/region, etc.

Hello everyone.

Apologize in advance for may be dumb question, but it emerged and I'm confused.

So: Is it possible to create a working multilingual translation memory in Trados 2014?
That is, which will include one source language and several target languages (example: English - Chinese, Japanese, Lithuanian, and others)

Thank you very much!

If you created a project and assigned a TM to the project, then pretranslation is accomplished automatically during the "Prepare" task, which means that you should see all 100% matches inserted already.

You can however run this task again at any time by going to "Batch task - Pretranslate".

About bugs in Sdl Trados 2015 | What do you call a bug?

Post title: What do you call a bug?

I guess that the judgment whether a bug is "dramatic" or not is very individual. When you say that Studio 2011 has problem merging segments, I assume you mean the fact that one cannot merge segments across "hard returns" (paragraph boundaries). This is not a bug, but a design decision of SDL and this has not changed in Studio 2015.

Having said this, the current Studio 2015 SR2 is very stable and does not have "dramatic" bugs as far as I am aware.

Concerning PDFs, Studio includes an integrated PDF conversion tool, which is customisable. The quality of the output depends - as with any PDF conversion tool - mainly on the type of PDF document. You may need to "clean" the WORD file resulting from the conversion before you start translating it in Studio if you want to have a clean document with not too many tags. But this is not a problem of Studio, but inherent to the conversion of PDFs, which should remain an exception. Remember that PDF is not an editable format, so you should always try to get the editable format that existed before the PDF was created.

If these segments do not need to be translated, I suggest you use the display filter to show them, then select them all and lock them. This will prevent them from getting any text inserted in the target segment and the target document will contain your source text.

Do this before you start the translation of the rest of the document.

Client cannot generate target text | This is due to the new Word filter

Post title: This is due to the new Word filter

Hi

Studio 2015 uses a new Word filter called "Microsoft Word 2007-2016". If you enable this filter (which is the case by default) and send the resulting SDLXLIFF to someone who uses an older version of Studio, which does not have this filter, this person can translate the SDLXLIFF, but cannot do a preview nor generate the target. This is due to the fact that his Studio does not have the new Word filter that has been used to generate the SDLXLIFF. But if this person returns the SDLXLIFF to you, you can generate the target in Studio 2015 without any problem.

If this happens often, you may work around the problem by disabling the new Word filter in your Studio 2015 or simply by changing the order of precedence. In "Files - Options - File types", move the file type "Microsoft Word 2007-2016" below the file type "Microsoft Word 2007-2013". This will cause Studio to use the older Word filter for .DOCX files.

You may also create a separate project template for this scenario, so that you don't need to change the settings all the time.

Thank you, Walter. However, I had already disabled the filter and nothing had changed. I'll now try moving it below 'Microsoft Word 2007-2013' while keeping it disabled, although I doubt that it can make a difference. But never say never!

Gabriel

As Studio is a Windows program and runs in a VM under Parallels, it uses the fonts installed in Windows and does not care at all about the fonts you have installed on the Mac.

I guess that your problem must be related, as you suggested, to the fact that your Windows installation is missing some default fonts.

You can change the font used by Studio by going to "File - Editor - Font Adaptation". You can choose the font to be used separately for each language.

I suggest you select a font for your target language of which you are sure that it does exist in your Windows and see if that makes a difference.

Thank you sirs!

Indeed if you set the window to Auto-Hide it works fastly. I really like the Terminology Window to be open all the time, but I can live without it! :-)

Again, thank you very much, you helped me a lot!

Have a wonderful day!

I sent them a .sdltm file, not a .SDLXLIFF. Could this be it?

Thanks again,

There is a nice workaround (I am sure Walter knows it, he clearly being an advanced user), which I learned from Emma Goldsmith (thank you Emma!) some time ago. This workaround has been extremely useful to me many times.

You simply cut the text from the second segment and paste it in the first one, by using the “Edit Source” command for both operations.

Here is the link to Emma's workaround, under Source Segment Editing:

Post title: Studio can handle Open Office Documents but ...

... the question is rather which document formats you get for translation.

If your customers send you Microsoft Office documents (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, ...) for translation, you will be able to translate them but not to preview them if you don't have Microsoft Office installed on your PC.

The decision whether you need Microsoft Office does basically not depend on your personal needs in terms of creating documents but rather on the requirements of your customers.

Hi all,

I've translated an MS Word file in Trados Studio 2015 and tried to save the target file, but Trados generates the same source file in the source language. My client is waiting for his file and I don't know how to solve this, as I've never had this issue before. Any idea of what may be the problem?

Regards, Karina.

Dmitriy

This is not possible as a TM is by definition always bilingual (one source and one target language) and also only works in one direction, meaning that if you translate for example from English to Lithuanian as well as from Lithuanian to English, you need two TMs, one En-Lt and one Lt-En.

How did you generate the target file? Did you use the command "Save as target"?

Is the right-hand column of your Editor populated with the translation? Do you see the target text if you do a preview?
If yes, when seeing this preview in Word, simply use the Word command "Save as", this will give the same result and save your target document in the folder you specify.
