Newbie, what should I do, and how should I do it:-)?

Hey guys,

I have not worked much with Trados, usually run another software, but I am getting a bunch of new clients that ask for it.

I have this project file in front of me now that say,

Match
Words

95% - 99%
2 183

85% - 94%
2 197

No Match
599

So, I open the project in Trados, how do I make these things all 100% and what in the world knows that I am correct.

What does it mean with 95% - 99% match?

And what is CT (context match) which some of those turned into after changes.

Sorry for probably obvious questions, just a new world for me.

I strongly recommend that you urgently take a course (online, or in person) in the use of Studio and CAT technology in general. Indeed, 99% of agencies use a CAT tool (SDL Studio is not the only or the best one), and your questions will answered once you get to know how to work with a CAT tool.

I am sure you have training centres in Latvia offering courses, or even a local university might have a summer course on CAT tools.

Was more wondering about the client expectations based on the less than 100% matches and not the actual functions of Trados. But all fine, I understood how to proceed.

I guess the client expects you to adhere to existing terminology, so, if you get, say, a 75% match, Studio will highlight the different parts in red in the automatic lookup, and you should probably also check that other relevant terms don't already exist in both the TM and TB.

Unless those matches are internal matches, without a TM, in which case, I guess your only "constraints" would be common sense and consistency...

Yes, I noticed changes in the source with was the reason for making the segments unconfirmed. So I have to change an ! for a . in some places, rewrite a bit in others and translate the missing segments.

It was that match analysis I got that confused me. Not been handed a project-in-work before so got confused. But I actually can just ignore those match values.

It is a part of a large project so there is some TM file that do what you say. I see the fields and terms that should be used in most occasions.

Thanks! Was actually using Fluency, I like that software, but my clientele have shifted over the last months and most of my new ones have built their systems around Trados, so good tip! Will look around for some video tuts.

As others have said, it takes time to get used to CAT tools... (and/or new tools)

Basically, use the matches you're presented with to do less work and keep consistency (unless the translation is obviously wrong, of course). If you get a 99% match, you'll probably have to just change things such as punctuation or capitalization, as in your example.

The overall analysis is basically used by agencies to reduce rates based on those "fuzzy bands", but you and the agency should already have agreed on that. Other than that, it can give you a basic idea of the workload you can expect. For instance, if you have 10k source words, but with 8k of 100% matches... well, your "real" work should be down to 2k ;-)

If you are new to Studio, I presume you are getting those matches from translation memory provided by your customer (you got a Studio package, very likely).

Should this be the case, you cannot ignore those matches and translate the segments from sctatch, as they contain terminology and style accepted by that specific end client. Just bear that in mind.

I bought the SDL autosuggest feature long ago, when it was a separate option (studio 2009), I got the function and it worked.

That for, I don't understand why I should buy AGAIN autosuggest creator add-on (SDL 2015)
priced €200, since I already paid for the function.

This is Guillaume from SDL.

SDL Trados Studio 2015 lets you add comments to your translations and comments, if added to a Word file, will also appear in Word.

This works fine for 2016 docx files with Studio 2011 ---- but not for 2016 Excel files (xlsx).
I tried version number 15.0300, 15.0000 (to be safe), and 13.0000 (which is the version number I found in my "old" (2007) xlsx files. All failed on "pre-scanning":

pre-scanning failed to identify the file type, the following messages were generated:
pre-scanning error: invalid file format.

Any ideas [besides upgrading Studio]?

Hello Christian,

Sorry if I answer your question quite late. I did an alignment job a few months ago and I experienced the same kind of problem.

I was using a laptop connected to a separate screen with a high resolution, the one by default when I (physically) close the laptop. After some time, I realized the alignment tool worked faster when the laptop was not connected to the separate screen, or when it was connected but not closed. I’ve been using Windows 10 for a few months, but I don’t know if it matters anyhow.

I hope this can help you or anyone else, though this is just what I experienced.

Hi,
I'm facing a problem with Studio 2011. I've translated a .docx document, but when I try to save target as .docx, I receive the following error message: "Failed to save target content: riferimento a un oggetto non impostato su un’istanza di oggetto". I was able to save a .docx target file several times during my work, but now this saving problem has suddenly occured. I can't understand where the problem is (I can't find any tags or errors). Could anybody help?

Hi Imanizadeh,

Why not suggest it in the app idea competition. I think it might not be too difficult to implement and if people wanted to see "endnotes", not comments, added to a translated file they could vote too.

Tags not visible in source

I almost daily use Studio 2015, but this has never happened before. When I see a segment with tags, I either copy the source to target or, when the translation comes from the tm, I copy the tags from source into the target text. If I miss a tag, or if there are too many of them, Studio puts a small x beneath the segment so I can check what's wrong.

But last week I got a package with merged files. There were only few segments with tags in it. After delivery the PM wondered why I had not taken account of the tags. Later she answered that her colleague had opened the return package and on her machine with Studio 2015 there were no tags in the source, but on her own machine with 2015 there were tags all about. She sent me a screen shot.

I re-opened the project and say now tags. Then I went to the panel where I can choose who tags are displayed, clicked on one of the icons and suddenly I saw tags all over the source file, but not in my translation.

Now I wonder how this was possible, why Studio did not display a note about missing tags?

Studio and Processors/RAM

My PC died recently and, oddly, so did my laptop - all in the same week. I am therefore in the process of selecting specs to have a PC built for my translating work.

I was wondering if anyone knew much about the technical aspects of Studio and how well it works with multiple cores/threads and so on. The reason I ask is that I am trying to finalise my choice of processor, among other things.

Assuming we are talking latest generation (6 - skylake), if I go for an i3 e.g. the 6320, I get two cores at pretty high gHz frequencies (3.9 gHz) with 4 threads I believe. If I went for an i5, I'd get lower frequencies off the bat, but there's an automatic over-clocking built in that boosts speed as required (turbo frequency - they go from 2.7 to 3.3 on the i5 6400 for example). There are also 4 physical cores for the 4 threads.

I'm leaning towards the i3 because of the low power consumption (i.e. less heat), however would I be better with the i5 specifically for use with Studio? Is Studio code developed in such a way that it makes better use of multiple cores or would a faster single/dual core be better suited?

I ask partly because I am currently using a laptop on loan which has a 2nd gen i5 processor. It's a pretty well built and well maintained machine (borrowed it from a computer repair shop while my laptop is being fixed), but SDL Trados Studio 2014 is really pushing it. I notice that over time Studio keeps using more and more RAM to the point that it eventually crashes. There are 4GB onboard this which should be ample really (maybe not?). I do tend to use the DGT TMs (usually one per project) which are pretty big, an MT plugin, plus my own TMs. However this shouldn't be making Studio that resource hungry should it? It can easily be using 2+ GB of RAM and it used to use this on my PC too. Obviously I'll put at least 8GB in the new build.

Any thoughts from the more technically minded out there? I am a little limited in this respect.

I suggest you to observe reports on crashes of Studio. I roughly summarize as failure of RAM, Internet connection, TM searches.

Therefore, I am prone to larger RAM size, not processor performances. In fact, in my PC, 4GB RAM with Dual-Core CPU is sufficient for rather large volume jobs e.g. 1-2 GB file size projects and Trados Studio 2015.

Perhaps the tags in the source text were hidden. If the source text is.doc file, you can open it in office word, Ctrl+a, ctrl+d, and remove the check in front of "hide".
