Using XML files with Trados 2011

Hello,

I am a newbie regarding the use of XML files with TRADOS 2011...

I found an old forum post regarding this issue but it dates back to 2005. Is this procedure still valid for Trados 2011 please?

"Open the xml file in TagEditor (having first opened the relevant TM in Workbench) and hit Save (Ctrl+S). TagEditor automatically saves the xml file as ttx.
When you're done, clean the clean using the workbench, and the cleaned file is converted back to xml."

What does he mean by "open the relevant TM in Workbench first"? How do you do that? I only have an XML source document.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your reply.

Would this kind of help actually be covered by an SDL PSMA? Would one of your support staff remotely log into my system to help me adjust the Studio settings so that the ASP files get displayed correctly?

I had contacted SDL through this site: [url removed] I reached there clicking the option in "If you would like assistance purchasing Licenses, Upgrades, PSMA, Training or Professional Services please request a quotation."

Best regards,

Stefanie

Hi Stefanie,

I think this kind of thing is an interesting one. You only included a snippet of the code so this could be simple, intricate and time consuming, buggy... but we won't know until we see the file.

The support team will always spend as much time as is needed to help try and resolve things that should be working. But if the request is about customisation, and this can include configuring filetypes, then this would not be covered by a PSMA. So if it's simple support are always likely to try and help, but they can't spend a lot of time if the resolution is purely customisation... they can just try to guide you so you do it yourself.

Hi Ulla

You would normally get this error if something has changed in SDLXLIFF file since you exported the file for review. As a workaround what you could try is:

1. Export the .SDLXLIFF file out again for review
2. Copy the target column from your original reviewed .docx file
3. Paste the contents into the new .docx file

If you still have issues please send me the files so I can take a look for you.

Thanks

Thanks, I followed the instructions of accepting all the necessary reviewed places, then exporting the review again and copying the accepted text into the new exported file and now it works! Thanks again!

... instructions for TagEditor and Workbench with how to handle files in Studio as they do not work the same way.

The basis procedure is the same but I would rewrite it at this level as follows:

"Open the xml file in Studio (selecting your TM when prompted). Studio will save this file as an SDLXLIFF. When you're done save the target file and the unclean file is converted back to xml (the clean file)."

But to be honest I would not write the procedure like this at all. You can find more info on how to handle XML files in Studio in the product help and also in this article: [url removed]

The article is about creating your own XML filetype which is something I would always recommend, but there is a default AnyXML filetype that will allow you to do the simple process outlined above without using a custom XML filetype at all. You just need to be aware that if you don't create a custom XML filetype then you may never know whether you translated everything you were supposed to, or what you should not have, until your client gets the clean (target) XML file back.

This also goes for TagEditor for that matter except you would create an ini file instead of an sdlftsettings file.

Thank you for the clarification, Paul!

Gina has called me in the meanwhile and we discussed my other questions. I have purchased a PSMA now.

Oops, I forgot about this topic since I was on a tight deadline.

Yes, I have implemented the termbase accordingly. This typically happens with some certain customers. Could it be some predefined setting in the studio package that causes this? Keep in mind that it only occurs for some terms, not all of them.

TM upgrade from txt files takes a ridiculous amount of time in Studio 2014

Topic: TM upgrade from txt files takes a ridiculous amount of time in Studio 2014
Poster: Hybinette

Sometimes I receive files for translation in the legacy ttx format, together with a memory export in txt. As you know, these files must first be upgraded to tmw and then after that to sdltm. In Studio 2011, this process was a piece of cake, but ever since I upgraded to Studio 2014, the first upgrade process has become unbearable.

When looking in Windows file explorer and refreshing the file view, I can see that the tmw file is created at a pace of about 1 MB per 5-10 minutes. Since the memory export is sometimes a bit over 100 MB, it is virtually impossible for me to do this on my own. Instead, I have to send the file to a colleague, who has Trados 2007, and ask him to upgrade the txt to a tmw. This takes him about 5-7 minutes, which would probably take 15-16 hours for me, and his computer is even way slower than mine.

I'd like to point out again that I was able to do this flawlessly in Studio 2011, so obviously there shouldn't be any technical limitations in the main source code of the program. Also, when my colleague sends me the tmw file, I can upgrade it to sdltm at the speed of light, so apparently this problem only occurs with txt files.

Any help in this issue will be greatly appreciated!

Pelle

Hello

I am sure this is posted elsewhere but I cannot find it...

How do you do a complete analysis of word counts (new, fuzzy etc) in Trados 2011 and create a report?

Thanks.

I know--very basic...just never had to do it before :)

... then the analysis is always carried out by default. But if you use the single document approach then you need to specifically run a batch task to create your report.

If you just want to run an analysis without the translation, as you probably did in Workbench, then there is an article here that might be useful for you : [url removed]

Hybinette, Paul,

I use the QA function with terminology extensively and this happens nearly all the time in nearly all my projects. As Hybinette observed, this happens with specific terms, not all of them and I see this happen both from EN to DE and from DE to EN. Whenever I had some time, I tried to investigate possible causes but I simply could not find any reason for this effect. However, it seems to happen in specific segments, not all segments.

Typical other issues we often see, such as a term immediately following or preceding a tag not being recognized or a term where you accidentally have a period at the end in the termbase are not responsible for this particular issue.

As Hybinette says this can be quite frustrating because you waste time checking, trying to find out where the (non)issue is.

QA Checker - Word List - Bad recognition

Poster: Pablo Mones

Hi, I don't know why, but since a few days I am having some problems with the "Word List" in "QA Checker".

The problem is that, although I clicked "search whole words only", Trados looks for partial coincidences, thus it keeps sending we false warnings.

Eg: mi list includes the following words: "ant", "y", "o", and whenever one word includes this letters, it sends me an error message (one message for every time the 'word' appears). Eg. I get an error message for "errOr", "pANT", "sillY", "abandOnedlY", "rOsOliO" and so on.

Does anybody know how to solve this?

Best.

Customising QuickInsert tags

Hi,

I'm using Trados Studio 2014, and I would like to know how to customise some of the greyed out quickinsert buttons on the home ribbon that are clearly there for this purpose. I use "No italics", "Apply highlight colour" and "No highlight colour" quite a lot, and would love to have them available there (or with a command) rather than having to open the quickinsert menu each time.

Thanks for any suggestions.

The following message appears when I created the target file using "save target as" command in Trados Studio 2014.

"Failed to save target content: The 'cf' start tag on line 1 position 266 does not match the end tag of 'P'. Line 1, position 1202."

Is there any way to fix it? The client is waiting for the translation
