... would be to run the installer again, without uninstalling anything and this may resolve the issue. It seems as though the installation is done but the application service does not start.

If this doesn't help please drop me an email, so I know who you are, and we can arrange for someone to take a look.

Hi,

I don't believe we provided Trados 2007 Suite with Studio 2011. We did with Studio 2009, but I think we stopped when we released Studio 2011. I seem to recall we did sell it as part of a package deal... although I'm not 100% on that.

... in the editor. can I just clarify what you are doing here.

- File -> Options -> Editor -> Font Adaptation
- Custom Language Fonts
- Change the font for the language you want
- Open the file again

The last part is important because changing the font in here without reopening the file won't make any changes at all.

The other point I guess is to make sure that the font you change to supports your language.

Also, when you say you cannot read it in TNR. is this because it's too small? Can you increase the size in the editor?

Post title: Half Good News

Thanks to help by local support staff and fact that we formatted and reinstalled the system (i.e. OS), we could retrieve back our Groupshare 2011 installation, with little data loss. Financially it's a mess of course.

Now, we have to work double hard to make up/compensate last two weeks' loss. Now I am creating projects, as usual....

However I cannot mention about one piece of software which was vital in this solution: It was clonezilla, a linux based disk cloning livecd. After installing the Windows 2008 R2 Server, I took an image of the vital parts, thereby we could manage to test almost a 100 solutions. When we break something I simply restore the partition and all is brand new again. (BTW, I am not exaggerating; I installed and reinstalled the Groupshare application so many times, I started dreaming about it, disrupting my peace of mind. Now I am celebrating with a bottle of scotch.... Yeah.)

Since I mentioned that I tried reinstalling it hundreds of times, that nullifies Paul's suggestion. (BTW, if I were in your shoes, I would obfuscate my email, (like pfilkin(at)sdl.com) posted on a board, since spam robots collect emails and that's why once I started receiving several hundred spam mails everyday. But I shall contact you when I sober up.)

Anyway the software piece (i.e. Groupshare 2014) has serious shortcomings:
1. IMHO (in my humble opinion) and as far as I observe, since it's not hardcoded software (i.e. not coded in c, c++, pascal, fortran, etc.) but rely on such volatile and bug-ridden, insecure quasi-programming languages as .net, java, any smallest change to .net, java VMs, etc. simply breaks the code. That's why, again IMHO, it acts strangely. (Dot Net is Micro and Soft's Wannabe Java. That's really it.)
2. Despite system requires a specific "locale" setting (i.e. English) on the server, the installation guide does not mention about that. After installing the server OS, the installer started giving strange and obscure errors such as "IIS not installed" (which is not true). (That's because locale of our OS is different from the requested locale, English. So I've been told.)
3. The process is not well documented. I mean, even a fully qualified system admin (which, despite I am not for Windoze domain, I am for linux (debian flavor) domain), could not find its way around. That's because, apart from being poorly documented, the error messages are cryptic and mostly not associated with the real cause of the error.
4. The installer requires different server/SQL configurations than stated in the Guide. That's really bad. Because, even the well qualified system admin (which our guy was), could not predict. SDL must consider the real solution of "Unattended Installation".

In order to -kinda- contribute the process, I shall post my findings and tips and tricks regarding the installation.

Now another problem is before me. It's a business decision:
I have so many translation projects. Consequently another two week disruption would be very bad not only for me but for my translators too. (I am a translator, by professions and I always look after my translators.)
The question is, is it possible to install this thing in a day on a platform and prerequisite software as stated in the guide????? (I mean I am told to buy SQL Server 2012 but the guide only recommends that if the file sizes are very large, which is not a case for us. Similarly I am also told to buy Windows 2012 Server. But that's not specified on the guide too. And I am told, "before" that somebody managed to install it on Windows 2008 Machine with SQL Express.)

If it's possible to do it so then I shall make an appointment with local support and they will help me do this.
However, if it's not possible, our company does not want to take this risk and has not an option but ask for refund and restitution of our 2011 licenses.

BTW, I am taking this opportunity to thank local support for their help.

Best Wishes,

[Edited at 2014-04-21 20:56 GMT]

Problem with Trados Studio 2014 corrupting the Idiom xlz file during export

Poster: Joanna Niemirowska

Hello!
I am having a problem with opening an Idiom xlz file after exporting it from Trados Studio 2014.
I've been using Trados Studio for translating Idiom files for quite a while now and there haven't been any problems so far. Lately I installed the new 2014 Studio version and now I received an Idiom project and wanted to use Trados Studio as usual. I wanted to check first if the translated file will export without any problems and it turned out there IS a problem. It seems that the file exports well but when I try opening it in Idiom I get an Import failed message saying: "Corrupt XLZ file".
If anyone encountered this problem and managed to solve it, I would really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance!

Post title: MultiTerm disappointment

I agree that Trados's solution to term bases is a complete disappointment.

In my experience, associating a document/project with a term base tends to make the entire program unstable. Then I will always run into terms that are being "currently used by another user", even though I am the only one who could possibly be using it, and thus cannot be edited. And then the problem that you refer to, where I have entered the term, but it does not appear highlighted in the source text.

My trial of memoQ revealed that the situation was even worse. Trados will not display any suggestions unless you have entered them in a term base associated with the document. MemoQ does so automatically.

So no help, just commiseration.

In this respect, both programs work the same way. You have to associate the term base with your project. It's quite logical, I think.

If the terms aren't displayed due to Jave issues or any other bug, the best thing is to contact SDL support through the Solution Finder: [url removed]

Hi all, I experienced the same problem with large files when using SDL Trados Studio 2011 (have 3 GB RAM and a 32-bit machine), upgrading to SDL Trados 2014 solved it. If you have purchased 2011 from SDL, you automatically have a starter licence for 2014 on your SDL account.

Hi Paul,

Starter doesn't recognize the TM as being selected - as you can see on the left side of the image: "No open translation memories or..."

As you can also see from the image, only one TM was selected (not a package) and it only has 969 TU.

This happens lots of times, no matter how many TUs the TM has.

Thanks!

So the error probably comes from your files.

Since last posting I have come across more examples like the one I mentioned earlier: terms inserted in the target segment from term recognition but showing error messages that the term is missing in the target segment.

Today I also noticed that a source term that is definitely in my Termbase is not showing up in the Term Recognition window (I have a screen shot showing it all). Since this thread is not getting any attention, I think I might need to start a new thread for this issue.

Trados 2009 or higher - 'xliff' file to 'ITD' file?

Hi, This is Jeongho.

In Korea, where I was born and raised, we rarely use Trados.

More than 50% or more of the translator even don't know what Trados is.

So it's hard to get a clear answer from them.

Anyway.. so here goes my question.

While using Trados 2009 or higer, I often face the situation to convert translated xliff file (unclean file) to ITD file.

Well, I was taught that it is impossible to convert xliff file to ITD file or any 2007 format.

Is that so? or am I missing something?

Please let me know if you have good ideas for this.

Thank you!

Thank you everyone for your comments, glad to know that I am not the only one having this strange problem!

The remaining issue for me is enabling java in my internet browsers- as previously mentioned, if I enable java in my browsers then Multiterm does not work correctly anymore, and now every time I want to surf the internet I get an annoying "enable java?" prompt. For the moment, I click "no". Also, for certain websites and some of my other applications, they refuse to work correctly because I have not enabled java.

Has anyone come up with a workaroud so that java works correctly in both Multiterm and IE/Chrome etc?

Thanks again for your input!

Kelly

Fortunately I stopped Java updates and did not end up with 55 installed (yet), but I had major problems with 51, and the Termbase is still not working completely. See here.

I hope that for this Java version SDL will solve this so that SDL's own (expensive) software will automatically fix itself without the customers having to go search for a fix (KB article) and download, install, uninstall, reinstall, change configurations and, finally, end up logging a support ticket anyway.

Please, Paul, could you post progress on this issue to this thread?

I have also had problems with multiple tags making the file illegible in 2014, and it turned out to be changes in fonts in the source text - (some kind of corruption) so I changed everything to one font, and could then read it fine.

I am just putting this out for future reference!

"one or more files not supported" in Align Documents

Topic:"one or more files not supported" in Align Documents
Poster: AgataTom

I have two perfectly correct docx files, however I am unable to align them - the above error message is displayed and the process stops. The same issue is when I convert them to doc format.

I believe that the old good WinAlign was a much, much better tool (although a slower and time-devouring one), as I could match all important segments in the way that made sense. The alignment tool in Studio 2014 (if working) omits so many segments and produces so many idiotic matches that it is barely useful. The "files not supported" error appearing now and then makes it completely unusable.

By the way, my SDL Trados Studio 2014 does not display the Preview, either, displaying an error message saying that this file format is not supported. I translate mostly MS Office files and this message appears whenever I try to see a preview of a docx (or a doc) file (not to mention eg. Excel).

Help!

I am not sure if I am the only one having this problem, and if others are holding off updating to Java update 55 while keeping an eye on the forum to see if there are problems. So I am posting this update!
I followed Paul's advice and logged a case (I have a support agreement!).
However, my problems remain despite the best efforts of SDL Support in a remote session. My case is still open and in the interim I have rolled-back to Java update 51 which does work perfectly.
Bizarrely I only have the problem on my Windows 7 computer - the update installed on my Vista laptop even with Java security settings on High (minimum recommended) without breaking MultiTerm.
I understand that an update for Studio is in the pipeline which may (or may not) solve the problem and am holding off updating Java until after the update.

Hello,

In Studio, is it possible to put the source text window at the top and the translation one in the bottom instead of two columns? I could not find an option to change this.

Thanks,
