Post title: Same problem

The same problem happens to me, especially when I start Trados. Trados stopos responding for some minutes in the visualization in the TM view, but after it returns to normal.
Other times it signals a TM error. I have to open it again (and everything is ok). but the same happens almost whenever I open Trados.
Other times, in the translation phase, it takes a lot of time searching for tm fuzzys and presenting them in the translation window

My PC is new. 32gb ram

I try to see if the problem improves, otherwise I will install Trados again to see if the problem is corrected.

Good day,
What is a feasible way or [freeware] tool which can be used to find-replace the source data in a big (15kw) sdlxliff file? The changes that are required are simple, like "5mm" ->"5 mm" but they are numerous and randomly scattered in the source text.
Thank you.

Search the ]SDL AppStore for CleanUp Tasks and install it. That will replace text in the source using regexes, and a lot more besides. It works well for me. Read the ]help and examples carefully.

Removing languages from huge multilanguage termbases

Hi everyone,

An agency sent me two new termbases for a regular client. They both have thousands of terms in dozens of languages. I only have the termbases at this stage, but an urgent project should come up tomorrow. I'm afraid the TBs might slow down Trados as they are really big, so I thought I'd better remove the languages I don't need and create a new TB with my language pair only. I followed the procedure described here: I converted the original .sdltb to Excel with Glossary Converter, deleted the languages I don't need, and created a new TB by converting the resulting Excel file to a new .sdltb termbase.

It worked smoothly for the first TB, which was smaller, but I can't make it work with the second one. I got a System.OutOfMemoryException, so I tried the workaround suggested on Glossary Converter's help section, i.e. I changed the LargeFileExcelMode in the Advanced Settings to True. I managed to convert the .sdltb to .xlsx this way, but the content is all mixed up, so it's basically useless.

Do you know of any other way to remove the languages I don't need from the .sdltb file? I can't say I'm very tech-savvy, but I'll do my best.

Note: I use SDL Trados Studio 2017 on Windows 10 64-bit, my Glossary Converter version is 6.0.7588.

Hi everyone,
Does anyone know if the latest versions of Trados Studio have a lexicon feature like Atril DVX2/3 have (and previous DV versions also had)? That is to say a separate list of terms just for the project in hand that can be created by highlighting the source and target and adding them to the list. It wasn't available in Studio 2007 I don't think.

Removing languages from huge multilanguage termbases | WfConverter

You can try another converter from this link:
Note that there must always be two files in the same folder: sqlite3.dll and WfConverter.exe. There are some other download links on the Internet that only contain WfConverter.exe, but it will not work alone.
With WfConverter you can convert your termbase to a csv file. (For 'Input file' choose *.sdltb)
When you have a csv file, follow the steps below:
1. Open a new Excel sheet, select the Data tab, then click 'From Text/CSV file' in the Get External Data group.
2. Browse to your csv file and press 'Import'.
3. Press 'Load' (this button name may differ because I have a Russian version; from Russian it translates to 'Load') in the lower right part of the wizard.

How to convert a (scanned) PDF into Word in Trados 2019

Hi,

I´d need some help from someone familiar with Trados 2019. I bought the latest update in autumn, mostly for its OCR software for the conversion of (scanned) PDF files into Word since I receive quite a large number of non-editable PDFs from a certain agency. I hoped the software would save me time and effort but somehow I just don´t see how the conversion of the file in Trados is done. Watching tutorials hasn´t helped, either. Is anybody here willing to help and share some useful advice?

Thank you!

Hi, I use Adobe Acrobat DC to perform the OCR, and then import the PDF to Trados (I have 2021, but 2019 works too). Sometimes, it works, but sometimes I have to export from Adobe to Word and fix the errors, before importing to SDL Trados as a Word file.

Post title: Add pdf directly to project and double-check converted document in project folder

I upload the pdf files directly to the project (when creating a new project). Trados converts the file when it "prepares" the project so you can then translate it. I usually double-check that the conversion has been done correctly before starting to translate it by going to the project folder (wherever you have saved it locally or in the cloud), and clicking on the source language folder. In this folder, you should see the original pdf file that you uploaded plus the converted file.
Sometimes Trados struggles with scanned documents or poor quality files, so I also use Adobe in these cases to convert the pdf then I upload the word. But I would say that in general pdf conversion has improved in recent versions of Trados (I use the 2019 version too).
If for some reason your files are not converting at all, maybe double check the "file types" section under "options", then scroll down to see the options selected for pdf files.
Send me a private message if you still have issues and I can send you some screenshots.

Thanks for coming to help me, guys.
I tried both methods and will use MS Word as a text editor for search/replace, because it allows me to limit the range to the essential data, without damaging the rest of it.
I am not skilled enough to use Notepad or other text editors and limit the range to the data between certain tags.
I do not like the usability and philosophy of Studio plugins, won't use them.
Happy translating and thanks again!

I didn't know of that plugin. A very useful feature. Loads of thanks.

@kd42
If you choose to use MS Word, you can use the following regex replacement (with 'Use wildcards' checkbox ticked):
Find what: ([0-9])([A-Za-z])
Replace with: \1 \2

This regex will find any number ([0-9]) followed by any letter, either upper or lower case ([A-Za-z]), and replace it with same element number one (\1) followed by space and followed by same element number two (\2).
The regex will cover chemical formulas like Na2SO4 => Na2 SO4. Therefore, use it carefully.
***
([0-9]) = \1
([A-Za-z]) = \2

Thanks a lot, Stepan, for reconfirming my approach.
Since Studio XLIFF contains two instances of source one of which must not be changed, I plan to apply bold font attribute to the ranges which may be changed, and then limit the find-replace passes to bold characters only.

Thanks for your help, Stepan. I tried, but it's not working either. I'm not sure what the issue might be, to be honest. I think I'll just wait for the PM to send me the project and try to work with the termbase as is. I'll keep looking for some other way to convert it in the meantime.

Lexicon in Trados Studio? | Workaround?

Post title: Workaround?

As far as I know, Studio 2021 doesn't provide a dedicated Lexicon in the way Déjà Vu does. However, you can set up a dedicated termbase for every new project. I didn't check this but I think that it's possible to assign an existing, empty termbase to a project template. Perhaps it lets you even create a new one with every new project? If not, you could copy an empty termbase manually (or macro-wise, e.g. with AutoHotkey) to a dedicated folder (as specified in the project template), while overwriting or renaming any existing one. I don't know how to give this 'project termbase' the highest priority.

Anyway, the adding of term pairs to a termbase has been improved in Studio 2021.

Such a "lexicon" is not brought into existence by default unless, as Hans surmises, this can be done via a template.

What I do is just duplicate an existing termbase without copying any of the content by going to Project Settings -> Termbases -> Create -> New File-based -> Next -> Use an existing termbase as a template. Ensure that "Copy catalog objects to the new termbase" is not checked. After that, follow the wizard prompts.

Adding terms is as simple as selecting the term in source and target and hitting the hotkey for "Quick Add New Term", which you can find in File -> Options -> Keyboard Shortcuts. It could be quicker, but it works fine.

Thanks Hans, Wolfgang and Dan.

Dan and Hans I've made a note of what you've said for future reference.

It seems like a workaround that not everyone would think of using, so I wonder how most people using Trados create their project lexicons, which is an essential part of the job as far as I'm concerned, especially with a long text. And the lexicon needs to take priority over your general terminology database, otherwise there is little point to it, and this doesn't seem to happen with the workaround from what I understand.

Also the "assemble" feature in DV is excellent, I wouldn't want to be without that.

Thanks again.
Jon

Priority is given to the termbase at the top of the list, so additions will automatically go to that, and suggestions from that termbase will be prioritised.
