I also think the software should work. We have many thousands of users who don't experience these issues. I'm certainly not saying it's perfect, it's not. I'm also not expecting you to search for hours looking for your own solutions. The link to the SDL Community is a forum, not a knowledgebase. You may well find solutions in there but you can easily post a question in there and for the most part you get help very quickly, either from another user or from someone in SDL.
Valentine Elleau wrote:

Pay extra for what? I thought we just concluded you don't have to pay for a support contract to get help. A support contract is one way to get help... I actually think it's a very good way as it's a contract to make sure you as a business receive guaranteed help when you need it (your problem might not always be due to the SDL software), and all your upgrades included. It's a business decision you make.

But you can use the SDL Community which offers very good assistance, and help that often goes way beyond anything you could reasonably expect to receive free help for.

Take care when installing the update, it messed up my Studio installation to the extent that I had to copy a virtual machine with a running Studio from a recent update to my main system. It was impossible to run, uninstall and reinstall Studio after the "update".

In my case, luckily all went fine. My VMware virtual machine with Windows 10 is relatively clean, since I only use it for SDL Studio. After every step of the deinstallation and installation process, I reboot the VM, in order to unlock any active components of Studio.

I am reluctantly going to support Paul and say that while I agree wholeheartedly that Studio is not perfect, I have never experienced the major issues reported by some people, which I suspect are caused by unfortunate interactions between hardware, applications and the operating system.

What should you do when such problems occur? I do not have a support contract, but I have always received answers to my questions on the SDL Forum to which Paul links above. Nearly always these help me resolve the problem. As a first step I encourage all Studio users to register for the forum. It is usually a better place to get help than ProZ.com.

Dan

Studio is not alone in being expensive and having bugs, I'm afraid. I am using Studio, memoQ, Dejavu and memsource, and I am even more frustrated with memoQ than Studio when it comes to being slow. I suspect that regardless which CAT tool you choose, you risk problems and slow support, at least if the CAT tool has a large user base.

I quote Paul in answer to this query 3 years ago on the SDL Trados Productivity forum:

"The reason for this is most likely because you finalised the projects. If you do this you are in effect saying they are done and you don't need them anymore. If you update your TM as you work, and just save the target files as you do them then there is no need to finalise at all. However , if you do then you need to enable the project again and this message is just telling you this."

This is not a workaround and learning the software is more productive than complaining.
IOW, a useful reason for this would be to simply save the files in target format and forget about the Finalize batch process altogether, because it is not needed.

Until yesterday Studio worked. This morning I updated my Studio 2019 to the last SR2 and on trying to start Studio I get the message Service "SDL.TranslationStudio.AlignmentEditor.lAlignementEditor Service could not be started". A bug which apparently is an old hat. Fact is that the solutions suggested in Knowledge Base do not work, I cannot repair nor uninstall Studio (neither through Windows Uninstall nor with Revu Uninstaller) as per error message I need the old installer to uninstall the new installation and... well, it's a mess. Who said "I hate Studio"... ? Count me in. If I get it to run again, 2019 will definitely be the last version I bought from SDL.
Anyhow... anyone with a solution to this umpteenth bug?
Further to my post, I received a notification for an update of 2019 RS2 twice or even more in my Notification panel. This update failed twice and I went back to v15.2.0.1041. Funny thing is that the notification has now vanished. Is this on/off behaviour a Brexit effect?

Hi Wolfgang,

I have no idea what you did or did not, and why you are having problems updating.

However, I do know that you have to remove and/or rename (to reinstall later) a whole range of settings in order to do a clean uninstall.
Try using the free app FreshStart, which is user-friendly and configurable for this purpose.
BTW, you are also entitled to support on installation/uninstallation issues, but this is easier and faster.

HTH,
Sandra

P.S. Of course it's the Brexit...

Hi Sandra&Kenneth
I did nothing more than trying to update my 2019 installation with the update offered in my notification pane, that is, v15.2.5.2145. This update failed with the error message "SDL.TranslationStudio.AlignmentEditor.lAlignementEditor Service could not be started". This happened twice. I tried the different "solutions" offered for this bug, but none worked so I reverted back to my previous version which was a chore as after cleaning (uninstalling) everything SDL Studio 2019 from my PC (even inside the registry) the Installer kept saying that I had a later version of Studio 2019 installed and that an older version could not be installed.
I did not and I do not want to make a fresh start, there's no reason to do that, I just wanted to update.

Hi Wolfgang,
There seems to be a contradiction between the two above statements.

Let me summarize:

1. You seem to be the only one to have this problem. I just upgraded without any of these issues.
2. If you wish to clean the failed version and reinstall the update successfully, you will have to uninstall it first fully. This is what I was talking about. You can contact SDL support or do it yourself anyway you wish. I told you what I would do.
3. If you don't want to reinstall and clean up the settings and this is just a rant, ignore my post, and you'll have good reasons to continue to rant.

Hi Wolfgang,

Hi Sandra.
Yes, probably I'm the only one with this problem. And, yes, this is a rant for sure. ;-)
I will try other solutions but am not sure I will succeed as the update version v15.2.5.2145 is not available/shown in my Notifications panel anymore.
Thanks for helping.

Hi Stepan
yes, of course I did many times, and yesterday all of sudden the update was available again, but failed again with the same error message. This is definitely the first time I have problems installing Studio updates. Luckily, I do not have to rely on Studio for my projects.

why embedded content tag definition would work in PO but not in XML files

Topic: why embedded content tag definition would work in PO but not in XML files
Poster: Hakan Kiyici

Hi

I have successfully used tag definition rules for the embedded content in PO files. I picked them from Paul Filkin's blog at multifarious.filkin.com

They worked perfectly fine. I used
(\\{2})?
%\d+
\$\[\w+\]
%\w+
\$\w+

The client serves the content in PO and XML files. But this time, due to some issues PO files have very long segments. XML files look have more manageable segments. But tag definitions do not work as in PO files. I put them both in project and main definitions.

The worst case I will have to create a custom XML, but it would take too much time for me.

Any idea?

Thank you

Ok, so, how does a licence work? I just got Studio 2019.
Installed on a PC I'm having some troubles with.
Like returning the licence...Is it at all possible to
return the licence from another PC?
This is all online, so maybe it would be possible?
Thanks, I hope my question is not too "naive".

Thanks a lot!

You can't use one computer to "return" the license that is used on another computer. The license has to be "returned" on the same computer that the license is or was being used on. This means that if your computer broke before you could "return" the license, you can't return it.

This is a problem, but the solution is simple: contact Trados, tell them your situation (I'm sure it happens A LOT), and tell them to reset your licenses so that you have all activations again.

Log into your SDL account, go to this address:

and click the "Request license reset" button.

Yes it is certainly possible to "return" a license also from another PC. In fact if you lose you PC or you get it stolen you can still log in to your account from another PC and use the Force Return procedure, through which you can disconnet your licence from your lost/stolen PC and connect it to your new PC.
