Post title: here's what worked for me

i have studio 2017. accidentally closed the termbase viewer one fine day.
after i got it pinned back up, it wouldn't display any terms. the terms would be underlined in red in the source text, but the termbase window only ever read "no terms to display" or whatever it is.

what finally fixed it was this:

close termbase window
go to "view"
click "term recognition"

the end.

Translating a PDF which is both editable and scanned, how do I translate the scanned part?

Hi all,
I'm having some issues with Trados and hope someone can help! I am a very new user so hopefully there is a straight forward resolution.

A client sent me an XLIFF document to translate in Trados and a copy of the original source text in normal PDF form. I have translated the XLIFF document but there are two pages which are still in the source language and haven't translated (I notice they seem to be scanned in the PDF whereas the rest of the document is editable). Trados isn't showing this text for me to translate.

I tried opening the PDF version in Trados (which is identical to the XLIFF document but was simply sent as a copy of the original text) and have downloaded the Trados Iris feature for OCR and the missing text is now showing in the PDF version however this isn't the document I am supposed to use, the client has specified that I use the XLIFF document which leaves part of the PDF out.

Why does the Iris OCR feature not pick up the missing text in the XLIFF file? Am I doing something wrong here?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

For this use I am always using an OCR program. I have both Omnipage Pro and Abbyy Finereader, although I find Abbyy much better than Omnipage. Surprisingly enough, since it is a Russian development.

Then I would run the pdf through the OCR program and create a Word document, which I then import to Studio. Make it just editable, otherwise you get a lot of unwanted tags.

I would not use automatic OCR programs, since I very often find the result less than pleasing.

The XLIFF file contains what it contains. If it doesn't contain the missing text, then there is no way to add the missing text to it. If the client insists that you translate only the XLIFF file, then it means that you can't translate the missing text. Does the client know that there is text missing, and that the missing text is not in the XLIFF file? Sometimes clients deliberately omit content in the XLIFF file.

"the client has specified that I use the XLIFF document which leaves part of the PDF out."

If I understand correctly, your client doesn't need the PDF fragment translated, therefore, you can leave it as-is and attach to the translation. Or am I wrong?

When I'm wrong and that fragment must be translated, you should use the Iris OCR software to read the PDF fragment and convert it to DOC, DOCX, ODT or TXT, etc. whatever format is Trados-compatible. Then, you can translate it as a separate file (yet, if necessary, using the TM for the entire job). Finally, paste that fragment into the final target document in the location as in the source text.

Hi All,

I received a Word file in tracked changes, but could not open it in Trados Studio 2017. When trying to open it in Studio, it gave me an error message "The document cannot be processed since it contains unexpected content".

Any suggestion as to how to solve this problem and work with the file in Trados?

I am using Office 365 and my OS is Windows 10.

Thanks in advance.

You can't, unless you have the agency version of Studio. In Freelance versions, that option seems to permanently grayed out. You can only open packages you receive and create return packages.

Is there something specific you are trying to accomplish with a package that you can't do by just sending the elements of the package separately?

However, you need the SDL Trados Studio Professional edition to create packages. The Freelance edition does not support create packages, only opening packages and creating return packages.

I wonder if some kind soul can point me in the right direction.
I'm using Studio 2017, and, as a sort of self-study exercise I have tried, but failed, to create a simple shortcut solution giving a superscript ®. I think I must be missing something because the Trados Home menus give both a superscript shortcut, and an ® shortcut, so I'm thinking it shouldn't be too much of a challenge to combine the two.

I've tried using Auto Hotkey but need to dive deeper, so if somebody has some pointers regarding this...?
I've tried to create a "Custom Quickinsert" button on the "Trados - Home - Quickinsert" menu.
But to no avail.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi everybody!

I really need your help. I just upgraded to Studio 2019 and yesterday I translated my first job. It was a project package I received from a translation agency. This morning I wanted to review it and it was gone. I tried to open the package again, but the translation is not there.

Can someone tell me what happened? Is there a chance to get my translation back?

Thank you!
Claudia

I'm very much a beginner user of Trados, but as far as I know, Trados 2017 does not have the ability to run macros. A macro in this sense is a procedure that performs certain steps. The steps in your case would be 1. send ®, 2. select the 1 character before the cursor, 3. change font to superscript.
I've tried using AutoHotkey but need to dive deeper, so if somebody has some pointers regarding this...?
There is an AutoHotKey subforum on the official Trados forums:

I agree that AHK would be one possible solution here. I don't know AHK well enough to write the macro for you, but it would have at least these three steps:

1. send ®
2. send shift+left
3. send shift+ctrl+oemplus

The Trados shortcut for superscript is shift+ctrl+oemplus. "oemplus" means the "+" key that is NOT the one on the number pad. On my keyboard, to type oemplus, I have to press shift+equalsign, so for me, superscript in Trados is shift+ctrl+equalsign. On other keyboards, the oemplus may be a key that you press without pressing Shift, so what you need to put into the AHK may be different.

This means that for me, the AHK steps will be:

1. send ®
2. send +{Left}
3. send +^=

If I understand AHK correctly, this will also work:

1. send ®
2. send +{Left}
3. send +^{+}

An alternative method may be to put ® on the clipboard and then use Ctrl+V to paste it, before changing it to superscript. The clipboard method is useful if you need to send longer chunks of text, because if you just "send" text as-is, it tends to send it one character at a time, which is slower.

If you're going to add a lot of these, and you don't want to run out of shortcuts, look at the right-click menu script ]here.

It's possible that the project list is set to show only certain types of projects (e.g. ones that are unfinished). On the Home tab, at the left near the bottom, click "Projects" to open the Projects view. Then above it, on the left, there are three dropdown options, namely Status, Due Date and Type. Fiddle with those to see if you can make your project re-appear in the big Projects pane on the right.

If that doesn't help, try to find the project manually on your computer (can you remember in which folder it was created?), and then double-click the SDLPROJ file to re-open the project. Windows calls the SDLPROJ file the "SDL Trados Studio Project File". It's icon looks like this:
I tried to open the [forward] package again, but the translation is not there.
No, the forward package is just an easy way to set up a project. When you run the forward package, it sets up the project and puts the source files in the correct location. But when you do the translation, the forward package is not updated with anything. Running the forward package again will simply re-create the untranslated project (although in my experience it will warn you before overwriting your translation).

Font adaptation still does not work in 2019

Poster: Edward Bradburn

Hi Folks,

Apologies if this has covered already (it doesn't seem to have been from a quick search).

Basically, the font adaptation dialog in Studio 2019 Freelance changes the size but not the font.

I've changed the point size to a standard 12 point and the fonts to a monospaced font in source and target for easier reading but Studio ignores the font change although it does apply the point size change. Studio then tells me that "formatting in the original document may override font changes".

But if Trados is going to decide when to do this, why waste the user's time on a pointless dialog?

Has anyone managed to force Studio to adapt fonts 100%, all of the time, every time?

And if anyone from SDL is reading this -- why does font adaptation *not* adapt the font?

If I want to see what the document looks like in the original, I can obviously use the Preview. I don't need it in the translation segment editor, which I should be able to set up exactly as I want it.

Thanks,

Ed

SendInput {Shift down}{Left}{Shift up}
; Send superscript formatting shortcut
SendInput {Ctrl down}{Shift down}{+}{Shift up}{Ctrl up}

SendInput {Right}
return

Poster: Mathieu Jacquet

Dear all,

I vaguely remember a Trados feature which allowed to produce a pretranslation containing, as comments on source words, their equivalent drawn from a Multiterm termbase.

That meant that, when you opened your Word pretranslation, all source words which had an entry in your Multiterm termbase were highlighted with a comment containing its translation.

Does that still exist in SDL Trados 2019?

Best regards,
Mathieu.

Post title: Trados/MS Word MS Word Grammar Checker bug can be fixed easily

MS Word Grammar Checker has been a frequent cause of freezes in several earlier versions of Studio. It is a bug causing a huge problem, which however can be fixed easily this way, and the plugin can be kept!

1. Close Trados Studio and MS Word (any versions)

2. Locate MS Word normal.dot(m) template here: C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates.

3. Change its name to normal.bak

4. Restart Word, then close it.

5. Restart Trados Studio and most probably MS Grammar Checker will not be an issue, so that Studio will not freeze after Confirming a translation entry. (In case only MS Grammar Checker caused the problem.)
