Oh, and by the way: today, when trying to post something (unrelated) on the SDL forum I noticed that my posts are now subject to moderating. Talk about fairness! I'm not a conspiracy theories lover, but what is this if not an attempt to conceal the truth? I recommend you read through the thread I linked here carefully, watch Filkin's video and draw your own conclusions.

1. I have been using Trados starting with the Workbench and am quite familiar with all the versions. I check all the time the original copy for the "visual context", which is, indeed critical.

2. I read your post on the SDL site. I was shocked that a professional would use such language in any forum, let alone in a professional forum, under his real name, print the links to this post, and expect the forum participants to help. I am not surprised that your posts are moderated, I am surprised that it was not deleted and that people actually tried to help.

Sandra (or Kenneth)?,

You see, I'm experimenting with an innovative approach - combining substantive and to the point questions with giving the staff a little push into providing a substantive and to the point answer. Because the latter are rarely seen in the tech industry when it comes to tech problems. However, I never allow those "pushes" to replace substantive questions entirely.

And plus, the perk of the trade is that none of my customers care about what I think about the working tools I use and with what words I express my frustration with them. Why should anyone care what a plumber thinks about his wrench in the past time.

Also, the beginning of the moderation strangely coincided with my post here, though I might be wrong as to the exact timing. Anyway, it surely is convenient for Mr. Filkin or whoever moderates there to be able to approve my thoughts on their software from now on.

Hi Ekhangel,

This type of rants is not innovative and definitely not motivating (the "push").

You can think whatever you wish about your wrenches and anything else. You can curse SDL as much as you want in front of your computer when Trados crashes and you lose work. Nobody is happy when this happens, and it happens. However, posting this a public forum is a different story.

Your service provider is not a wrench.

Would you like your customers to use this language when they find an error or mistranslation in your work? Would you feel inspired to produce better work for them the next time or correct your mistakes?

Sandra

Yes, he is a wrench to me, just like I am a wrench to my customers. And I don’t expect anybody to have problems with me having expectations towards them. Just like I would not be surprised seeing my customers frustrated by my persistent, year-long failings, ignorance of quality matters and misleading them as to the reason of why my translations are bad.

Quality first, reliability second, manners third!

Marketing - somewhere at the bottom.

Confirm all in Trados Studio | Confirm all + update the TM in the same time

Post title: Confirm all + update the TM in the same time

First, let me thank the contributors of this topic.

And then, did you know it is actually possible and simple to confirm multiple strings while updating the TM at the same time ?

The answer comes from Tuomas Kostiainen's blog:

« Ok, now comes the exciting part… What about if you have several unconfirmed segments that you would like to “really” confirm, i.e. send to the memory as well? How do you do that? Here’s the answer: You select the target segments that you want to confirm (by holding down the Shift key and clicking in the first and last segments, for example, or selecting the text segment by segment with the Ctrl+Shift+DownArrow keyboard shortcut) and then just confirm them normally with Ctrl+Enter (or with any other confirmation command or button). You don’t even have to select the whole target cell. It’s enough to select just part of it. That simple. A word of warning though: sometimes it can take a while for Studio to do this if there are several segments to be confirmed, so be prepared.»

Amazing, isn't it?

Congrats Tuomas :)

Trados 2017 not showing full text after segments merged

As usual, I end up spending 10 times more trying to figure out Trados than acually translating...

I had to merge segments – and now find that while everything looks good in the source and target in Trados, when I hit preview [source or target] the rest of the sentence – except the first line,[ or the orignal first segment] – has disappeared: any ideas how to fix this?

[IE] 3 merged segemnts, for example, forming one full sentence in both source and target in Trados, only display the first line [presumably the initial segment] for both source and target in both html and embedded preview.

EG
- MERGED SOURCE READS:
Darüber hinaus werden in den Unternehmen zunehmend die aufbewahrungspflichtigen Unterlagen in elektronischer Form (z. B. als elektronische Dokumente) aufbewahrt.
- BUT THE EMBEDDED/HTML only shows the first half
- MERGED TARGET READS:
In addition, companies are increasingly storing documents that require retention in electronic form (e.g. as electronic documents).
- BUT THE EMBEDDED/HTML ARGET READS:
In addition, companies are increasingly storing documents that require retention in ....

It's somewhat arbitrary, since it works elsewhere in the file - and it's nothing to do with tags, since the segments merged don't have any tags. Beyond this I have no idea how to fix this.

Hello,

I have one more question with this text: C-529/07, EU:T:2009:361

I want to make a rule> notify error if there is: "C-" followed by 3 to 7 characters of any kind flowed by EU:T

my try, that doesn't work, was this: C.*{1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9}EU:T:

anybody knows where is the problem?

Setting to only auto-propagate exact matches including numbers?

Poster: Nicholas Knutsen

I have many segments that I translate like this:

(A) 1 out of 5 = 1 gang av 5
(B) 2 out of 5 = 2 ganger av 5
(C) 3 out of 5 = 3 ganger av 5

The word "ganger" is plural. The problem is that when I confirm (A), Trados auto-propagates all (B) and (C) segments to "gang", which is wrong. If I then correct (B) and confirm it, (A) changes to "ganger". I do want to auto-propagate, but only to the segments that match exactly. Ideally I'd want to auto-propagate (B) to all segments that don't have "1", like (C) etc. There should be a setting for Trados to differentiate between segments with the number "1" and any other number. But is there at least a segment to make Trados only auto-propagate to exact matches?

Post title: Disable Numbers in Recognize

Hi Nicholas,
I don't think this is possible at all. In Russian, there even more forms for different numerals:
1 буква (1 letter)
2, 3, 4 буквы (2, 3, 4 letters)
5, 6...20 букв_ (5, 6...20 letters)
21 буква (21 letters)
22, 23, 24 буквы (22, 23, 24 letters)
25, 26...30 букв_ (25, 26...30 letters)
etc.
I guess some other languages may behave the same [illogical as seen by other language speakers] way.

To prevent auto-propagation, you can instruct Trados not to recognize numbers. For this effect go to:
Project settings > Language pairs > All language pairs > Translation memory and automated translation > Select your enabled TM > Settings > Fields and settings > Uncheck the 'Numbers' box in the 'Recognize' section.

Remember to do the same steps for other TM(s) if you have more than one TM enabled.

Thanks. Preventing auto-propagation where only the numbers differ is indeed what I wanted to do. I followed your suggestion, even re-indexing the TM afterwards as it told me to, but to no avail. The exact same problem persists.

EDIT: In fact, it's not clear whether these settings (Translation memory and automated translation) only apply to the automatic translation that Trados does during preparation, or if they also apply to auto-propagation. It seems they do NOT apply to auto-propagation.

The online help does not mention auto-propagation, but as I said it's not very clear.

I did not mention it but you have to either re-create your project and uncheck that box when prompted during the Create project process (the step when you add a TM), or, after the said checkbox is unchecked in your existing project, you can just remove the file (when in source part of your project), then add and prepare it again.
Yes, they do apply to auto-propagation/translation workflow (not only to pretranslation). Before suggesting, I tried it myself and it worked. I don't create a new project for each next task. I just changed the settings and added a file with your text (3 segments as in your example exactly). No pretranslation/preparation was involved.

I don't do my translation work in Studio, but rather in Dejavu, but the same problem exists there. My solution would be to autopropagate (B) 2 out of 5 = 2 ganger av 5 or even force propagate, which is a possibility in Dejavu, and then search for "1 ganger" and replace it with "1 gang".
Greetings from a somewhat rainy and cold Norway. :)

Isn't there a setting to limit auto-propagation to the forward direction? (This isn't a real solution but a workaround ...)

Since Studio doesn't offer auto-assembling: is it possible to create a regular expression for auto-propagation?

It seems the default setting is what you are suggesting, but I don't think it is even a workaround, since the autopropagation will propagate the segment the first time it appears, in which case the wrong translation will still appear.

A better solution would be to change "the user will be prompted > Never - always propagate without prompting user" to "the user will be prompted > Always". That way the translator would be able to catch those few instances where the translation should be singular rather than plural. It slows things down, though, so I still prefer the Search & Replace suggestion I came up with above over this solution. But checking each segment when autopropagate should give the translator better control over the translation process, though, and should hopefully not take much time compared to the size of the project, even if the project is large.

I suggest a different method:

Once you've copied all the Source text to the Target column, do the following:
Find and Replace all "1 out of" with "1 gang av"
Find and Replace all "2 out of" with "2 ganger av"
Find and Replace all "3 out of" with "3 ganger av"
etc. until and including the highest number. Thereafter (assuming you've checked "Enable auto-propagation" and "Confirm segment after propagating an exact match") you will only need to confirm the first instance of any such translation. Trados will (or should, at least) do the rest.
