In SDL Trados Studio, can I translate a big file without saving it and generate target from memory?

I have a giant textfile with source in Chinese and English (only English is set as source, Chinese is only displayed but not active, just there for reference in the source segments) and target in Swedish. Because the source contains Chinese characters as well as Pinyin and other diacritics this file is very heavy to save, even if I would split it.

I tried copied a selection of segments, and I can't copy much before it's impossible to save the file. Neither saving the sdlxliff nor as target works. It only works to save as clean target through this workaround:

In the Files view, right-click the file -> Batch Tasks -> Export Files.
Click Next, then select "Target version," then click Finish.
( )

So I wonder if it could work if I just skip saving altogether and just confirm each translation into the translation memory. Then, after a few months (it's a BIG file), I use the above workaround and generate the target file in Swedish?

Hello all, I have tried all suggestions. What seems to work fine is Copy content to Notepad (always "clears" content) and Paste into a new .doc file and Save. Do this for both language versions. Works fine for Aligning the documents! Good luck!

I can't help with your problem, but what you wrote made me wonder how one would go about ensuring that the Chinese is displayed but not included in the TM. After all, if the source text field contains both Chinese and English, and you translate only the English text into the target field, the Chinese chunk of text will still end up in the TM. At least, that is what I understood by your comment "but not active" (or can you set the Chinese as "not active" in some other way?).

So, sorry, this is off-topic, but FWIW, for myself, I was able to do this by turning the Chinese+English TXT file into an HTML file and putting the Chinese text as "images", and then setting Trados' display setting to display full tags. Trados accepts a TXT file as "HTML" without the need for a head and body tags. Of course, if you don't copy the tags, you'll get all "missing tag" errors, but that won't affect the ability to generate the target file. If I understand correctly, the TM will not contain any Chinese (only a tag).

I'm curious as to how you set the Chinese as not active.

Hi,

I used TGB here to buy a copy of Trados 2017 last year, with a package deal of upgrading to 2019. I only used this Trados a few times last year. Then I stopped using this Trados completely for almost six months. I opened it today and found that it kept saying "could not create default project folder".

Did a community search and found that this "FreshStart" app is supposed to fix this problem, according to Trados official. Unfortunately, it didn't do the job. Now I'm getting "Service 'Sdl.TranslationStudio.Api.ProjectManagement.IProjectManagementService' could not be started".

I was wondering if that upgrade from 2017 confused the system, so I'd like to reinstall the Trados 2019 since I haven't really created any projects in 2019 yet.

How do I do this for a clean installation?

Thanks for your help.

Best,
Jean

Hello Collegues,

I've a document with a lot of terms which I placed in the relevant termbase.

I can see the termbase and terms are proposed by Autosggest.
But, when I run the Verification feature I only get other errors, such as punctuation, exta space etc.

Both in the project settings and in File > Options I've checked the boxes relevant to the terminology check.

I'm really getting crazy.

Thanks a lot

Lucia

Post title: It happens to me ALL THE TIME!!

I have this problem repeatedly with SDL Trados Studio 2019, and it has really brought my productivity down. I can cut, copy and paste text with no problem, I can usually delete with no problem, but if I start typing the Editor will randomly freeze. There is nothing to do but save the project and reopen it. If it happens more than a couple of times Trados itself will freeze and can only be closed by forcing a shutdown through the Task Manager. I hardly dare to type any more! It takes me forever to copy and paste into Trados, the only reason I keep using it is because I have dedicated extensive time and energy into my TMs and glossaries, and I keep hoping they will release a patch or something soon that will fix this issue. I upgraded from 2017 for free and I wish I could have 2017 back, but since the upgrade was free i has disappeared from my SDL page.

And I agree with you, it does seem to be getting progressively worse, and I have found no solution in the Knowledge Base or the Community Forums. I have literally spent hours trying to resolve this and have uninstalled and reinstalled the program more than once.

So here's two of us! I know there's more!

Hi Jean,
I recommend you use Revo Uninstaller (freeware) to do a clean uninstall of your previous version of Studio family of products. Just in case, do deactivate it first.
You can safely delete all what Revo Uninstaller finds in its "Advanced" analysis after the initial uninstallation you will go through.
Do tell me if you need any more hints.
Revo Uninstaller is really extraordinary. Leaves no traces of applications that don't completely uninstall, as is the case with Studio.
Good luck!

Well, you need to log in to your SDL account in order to download the installer and the license number(s).

2 approaches:

1. In Studio, I'd try to extract only English characters with regex.
2. I'd try to split that big TXT into several chunks, 10 for example.
I think one way or the other should work.
Also if you go to the SDL Community ( ) and paste some sample lines with Chinese and English text, I'm pretty sure some users would like to help with the regex.

Anyway, when I run Terminology Verification it provides so many fase positives it is almost useless.

Thanks for your help

When setting up a new project with one or more TMs, is there a way to avoid CM and 100% matching segments being automatically assigned the status "Translated" by the software? Sometimes I notice that some of those segments end up with the status "Translated".

I want to be able to confirm each segment manually, including CM and 100% matches. (Using SDL Trados Studio 2017)

Thank you.

Once machine-translated, words in different languages may have different position in the sentence. How, do you think, Trados (or any other algorithm) can know which target word to select for replacement. Technically, you can train an MT engine based on source language. However, from what you describe, your plan is to train Trados based on target.
At MT level, you can train it as mentioned by NeoAtlas (plus other trainable MT engines); at Trados target level, you can't.

@NeoAtlas Thank you, i will take a look at the Amazon API

@Stepan Konev
Thats true in fact. I have already realized it. I´m new in translation and I didn´t know that the most translationprogramms are working with stone-age methods. But the companies advertise their product as if they are technology from future. But in fact they are stupid and simple. And for their product they charge a lot of money. Not all translation software is overpriced, but Trados and MemoQ definetly.

But there is a possibility to do that, what I have described in my question.
And it functions like this:
Create an account at Google Cloud
Create a projectin Google Cloud Translate Service
Create a Google Cloud Translate API
And then upload the termbase which you want to be taken in account during translation in the cloud.
Then connect the termbase with the API.

Thats the theoretical part. But technicly its difficuilt. I dont know how to do it. The discription is there, but how to realize?!

Maybe this will also help someone for translating books with a lot of specific terms.

So i need consultation, how to connect the termbase to the API.

Hi guys,
I'm working on a large project on Trados Studio 2015. It was all fine until suddenly, yesterday afternoon, the "Error: could not find part of the path" message started appearing every time I hit save. I thought nothing of it and continued, but this morning I realised that the project is no longer showing on the project list. Also, the memory was never updated. The "editor" part is still open but I am scared to close it and try to reopen the package as I think I'll lose everything and I have already translated a lot of it. Any ideas? Please help, I'm desperate.

Integrating on TM into another

Hi everybody,

I was desperately trying to integrate several smaller TM's into a single large one. SDLX provided such an option where you could import one TM into another. Did not find such an option in SDL Studio 2019 though. Only found the option to import and export TM's separately but not to sort of "merge" them. Any ideas?

Thank you!
