I personally don't like it and use it as little as possible. Too many issues and not getting any better.

Most programs give you full control over where you save files. I really wish Studio did as well. It's really annoying to have to take files from its own folders and move them to where I actually want them every time I finish a project.

If you use the drag and drop for single documents then indeed you get the bucket approach... which I don't like either. If you use Projects with drag and drop then you can set templates to keep the projects wherever you like. You can also just use a shortcut instead of the single file drag and drop (use Ctrl+Shift+O) and then the files are saved in the same folder as the source.

It's all about choice and how you use the tool.

It's always easier and more pleasant to use an application with intelligent defaults. Saving the output another place than the input and mixing different clients' files in the same folder do not seem particularly intelligent to me, and mixing customers' files is a privacy risk.

Well, I don't see the point of creating tonnes of templates for clients that translate files of 55 or 77 words. And even with templates, Studio saves in the folder that was last used. But for my biggest client I create a new folder for every single project, otherwise I won't find myself. Thus I often happen to save in the wrong folder. So an option to choose the folder seems logic to me.

If you use templates Studio ALWAYS saves into the folder you set up in your template.

If you use a single document workflow and use Ctrl+Shift+O or use the File -> Translate Single Document then the project is ALWAYS created in the same folder as your source file.

If you don't use Project Templates and still create Projects rather than the single document workflow, and if you didn't bother to set up a project location then Studio will use the last location that was used. If you set up a location then it will ALWAYS use the location you set.

If you are still using an older version of Studio then this may not apply... but even if you do it's always possible to change the location of the projects when you create your project and put them anywhere you like.

I truly don't understand the problem here.

To my understanding a software should ask the user when saving a new file, not assume a location. Probably the programmers thought users should always use the Studio folder for all activity, but that is not a good idea.

SDL Trados 2015 - Target box not filled automatically from TM

Dear all,

I use Trados 2015 with some MT and a TM. None of the target translation results from a TM or MT get automatically projected into the target box, except using Ctrl + T.
Is there a way to get my target segment filled automatically? Does it have to do with the selection of languages for the TM?
Many thanks for your help.

Renaming the file as .xml allows Firefox to find it. But deleting it in hex editor seems to have no effect.

Someone at SDL also thinks it's a good idea to start sending you emails in German when you buy a licence, as I have found out, and getting English copies of the emails already sent in German is a big fight.

Why ask the client which language they prefer for communication when SDL staff obviously know that much better than the client?

Use "Pre-translate" by right-clicking on the file in the Files

Hi Helene

I've had this once - one of the segments in your translation should be the name of the worksheet (do you have the source file to check?) - you need to change the invalid character to something "valid" and then it should save.

Hope that works and it's not too late for you!

Is it also the reason why TRADOS won't let me preview the text? Because it shows the same message when I only want to preview it. Of course there are lots of uncopied tags in the text, because I have done only half of the translation. But still - does it mean I can't preview it until all tags are correct?
Hi, Agata. Did you get to know the solution. I am currently facing the same issue. Thanks

Post title: I managed to improve the situation

By creating a new TM from my main one. I can now create a project with very small content, previously I ran out of patience after waiting for 3 hours. I reorganised it first but that did not do any good.

I do not however use Linguee (or at least I am not aware of it). And my hard drive was checked 4 months ago.

I still get loads of fan buzzing time from time when Studio uses 99% of CPU and the only thing I can do is to turn Studio off (but it takes 5 minute to move the cursor to X to do that).

I really like Studio 2017, but in current form it is completely unusable. I have gone back to 2014 now, although I will have a serious problem if I have to reinstall the OS - I will be stuck with 2017 which I basically cannot use most of the time.

Trados Studio 2014 files won't close

Hi there,

I'm trying to do a file backup with some new software (AOMEI backupper), and it keeps returning the message "files open, cannot back up". The files shown are Studio files, even though I've closed the projects, closed Studio, and rebooted my laptop several times. Any advice on where these 'open' files might be hiding on my laptop or how to close them would be very gratefully received.

Thanks

1 -- The file system is corrupted. Use CHKDSK. See

2 -- The files are not on your laptop but in the cloud, in a NAS, or ...

3 -- There is a software that runs automatically upon any boot and reopens the files. Strange but possible. Have a guru take a look at your laptop. Or learn how to use MS Process Explorer. See

How to automatically update repeat segments during reviewing

Poster: Sara Galindo Álvarez

Hello everyone,

I hope I can explain this well enough! We all know when you have a file opened in the editor for translation, Trados will automatically translate segments that appear previously in the same text. What I'm wondering is if there's a way for Trados to update these segments when you make changes when you're in the editor for reviewing. I'm finding that when I'm reviewing someone's work, if X segment appears 10 times, I need to remember what changes I made the first time so I can apply them to the other 9 segments. Doesn't sound too complicated when it's a short text with few repetitions, but quite a hard task for longer, repetitive texts!

Thank you!

Sara
