I guess it's a muscle memory thing (or simply an issue of personal preference). I found that developing the ability and 'touch' to press the CTRL key with the palm is quite useful. It makes it more convenient to use a CTRL+Upper rows key shortcut.
Also, to borrow something from the coding world, some coders switch the functions of the Caps Lock and Ctrl keys. Some find it more convenient, but personally I didn't find it that helpful. I must admit that I didn't try very hard to adjust, it just felt wrong from the start and after a while I just concluded the experiment as "great, but not for me", but there are people who seem to like that arrangement.
