was indeed introduced in 2011. It was there for QA checks but didn't work with search and replace until 2011.
The Batch Search & Replace App still doesn't handle back references but the SDLXLIFF Toolkit does so you can handle multiple files/projects in one go with this tool. 2014 helps in this regard with the virtual merge but if you have many very large files then it's faster to use the toolkit.
