Post title: Still an issue ...

I am to this date, April 19 2017, still having this problem sometimes, and almost always when opening multiple sdlxliff files with the quick merge function in Studio 2014. One of my clients rarely sends packages, but sdlxliff files which I then import into an existing project. And usually I can open them one by one in the editor, but when using the quick merge function, the Check Out Error almost always appear (when handling files from this Client).

It's obviously not a question about the File Type Identifier since this exclusively happens with sdlxliff files. Could it be how my Client generates the files, i.e. the original file format, or some compatibility quirk with earlier Studio versions, e.g. if the files are created in Studio 2009?

It would be great with some follow-up input from Paul on this matter.

Studio 2017: accidental and unknown key combination, all segments translated and empty

Good morning,

This occurs sometimes and it's possible to undo this in case of small files, by selecting the empty segments and changing the segment status.

But my actual file is huge and I would like to know

1) how to avoid this handling error (what is the diabolical combination?)

2) how to come back to the precedent status....

Many thanks in advance

Hi All,

I'm editing a translation project with around a dozen files. With some of the files already edited, I ran into some others that were not completely translated. The PM is going to send me a new packet in which all the files will be completely translated, and asked me to create a TM so that the work I've done so far is not lost.

My Trados skills are basic, and I have no idea how to create a TM in this situation. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Anne,

The only solution I found is via the Integrated Segment Actions plugin:

This lets you select all confirmed empty segments and change their status back to 'not translated' in one go.

I've no idea how this actually happens, but it can be a real pain. I'm not sure, though, if it's happened to me since I upgraded to 2017. Might be a bug in earlier versions (?).

Many thanks Stephan...

I have installed it, but not yet found! I'm sorry, I have lost so much time before, that I must go on. I will try it later. It seems very interesting.

I have solved it in the following way:

- Display all new translated contents (Review/Segment types)
- All the empty segments are behind one other
- Select up to the last one (Ctrl + Shift + End)
- Place the cursor on the source column
- With right mouse button, choose Change segment status
- Choose Untranslated
- And it works... (counter included)

Have a nice day and thank you very much

Post title: Three Solutions

1. you could check in the "Projects" view that your project appears with "In progress" status, rather than "Completed" status. The "Completed" status would cause the "Create return package" option to be greyed out.

If this is the case, use the context menu to select the "Revert Project to In Progress" option. That should solve it (Paul's solution).
2. if you create this source package on your PC, you can try to create the return package on another PC (worked with me).
3. import the source package after translation then export it by MemoQ tool (worked with me).

Since I upgraded from SDL Studio 2015 to 2017 I can no longer create AutoSuggest dictionaries.

Actually I can still create them, but when I try to add them to a project I receive the message: "The AutoSuggest dictionary file could not be read."

At first I thought maybe my TM was corrupted or that I was adding too many translation units, but I have tried with other TMs (upLIFT and normal) and with the minimum number of TUs, but to no avail.

Any ideas?

Post title: Creating a TM

Hi Liz,
If I understand you correctly, you have worked without a TM at all.
In this case,
While your file is opened in the Editor window, nevigate to the Translation Memory tab at the lower left corner of the navigation pane and klick to open it.
In the TM page, klick on the New icon and follow the instruction to create a new TM.
Now, each of your files have a bilingual version designated as xxxx.sdlxliff
While your TM is opened in the TM window, look for the Import tab.
Klick it and choose the bilingual (sdlxliff) to import.
Do it, one at a time for each of your files.
Good luck

Post title: It happens

when you accidentally select a part of text in a current segment so that your selection also covers the next empty segment. The trick is that it may look so that you don't even see any sign of selection in the next segment as if you select only the text in your current segment (while in fact your selection "protrudes" to the next empty segment). For example, you move your mouse (with left button pressed) so that it crosses two adjacent segments (the one just translated + next empty). That's why it may be out of your control.
Make sure that no text is selected before confirming it.

Here's how:

1- Close the error message
2- File>Save As...
3- choose a different location than where the previous SDLXIFF file used to be
4- in that NEW location, also rename the file. Just rename it "1" or "new file" or something short. I think renaming it something short is essential
5- hit SAVE
6- Now save your translation and the problem should now be solved!

I'll be posting this on all the "content null" posts I can find in case it's helpful to anyone else, so if you see it all over Proz, it's not Spam! it's just joy at finally having cracked this pesky S.O.B.!
Post title: Check your Internet connection

Despite confident statements of SDL experts who say that they can use Trados even underground or under the sea or in space, I observe the same behaviour again and again since I bought 2011 (now I possess 2017): when you launch your copy of Tardos (no matter if you do it first or thousand first time), the first thing it does is checking your license. To do so, Trados goes to its server to check if your license is ok. For this purpose, you need to have Internet connection. Each time I launch Trados without Internet, it says my license has expired. As soon as I insert even a 2G USB modem into my computer, it works fine. So my suggestion is to check if you Internet connection is available. In 21st century, we have got used to have Internet so much that don't even notice it. SDL Support can reset your licence, and they do it pretty quickly, but it would be to no avail when next time you launch it again without Internet.

Advice on Organizing TMs

Topic: Advice on Organizing TMs
Poster: JW Narins

I translate RuEn and Ukr>En in a number of very different areas: legal, journalistic, literary (high), literary (pop), and more.

I've just moved from Studio 2015 to Studio 2017.

I want to use it as an opportunity to improve upon my rather haphazard use of the CAT tool.

I'm thinking bringing over the files, reviewing them, and making a project TM for each specific project, so i'll have a set of relatively small, thematically focused, "granular" TMs, so that for any new project I can combine them to have a focused choice of TMs.

But perhaps that's wrong and I'm thinking of TMs like autosuggest dictionaries...

In short, my goal is simple enough: to use whatever resources are available to maximize the number of suggestions I get while typing (I'm especially looking forward to the idea of TM unit fragments being a suggestion source) - and then have it be rich enough that I'll want to cut down the sources contributing those suggestions to leave a manageable number of maximally relevant suggestions.

Any and all advice (the more detailed, the better) would be appreciated.

Post title: Now, why would one need to reverse language pairs?

This is/was actually a glitch of many “hyped” translation tools, namely, they weren't able to use the same TM for both directions. More specifically, if you had an English-French TM you weren't able to simply use it for French-English translations.
This is/was the developer's fault, because relational database management was always prepared for running quick searches in any field of a database (or more databases) by using small index files.
So, in a good CAT the translator must be able to use the same English-French TM for French-English translations as well, without any further action, everything (index file switching) must be done by the software in the background after you selected the specific language pair.
In addition, using an English-UK TM for English-US translations must not be an impediment. I know that Trados Studio 2011 wasn't able to handle this situation; maybe the latest releases were improved in this regard.

Hello everybody,
l have a TM with a .tmw extension and I cannot convert it in a .tmx file. With other files like this, I uploaded them in Trados as a normal TM and I converted it automatically, but with this I receive an error message:

The translation memory is not supported:
SDL Trados 2007 file-based tms cannot be migrated because SDL Trados 2007 components cannot be found. Consider re-running the SDL Trados Studio 2014 installer or re-install/repair SDL Trados 2007 and try again.

Do I really have to re-install Trados 2014 or is there another way to do that?

Thank you,
Lorena

Dear Stepan,

well, just tried to open my 2011 and - out of the blue! I was told that my licence is "wrong" and was informed that the illegal (!!) use of software is punishable. (No way to return my licence and try to attach another one, I'm - was?! proud owner of various licences)

Ooookay, I thought, let me check my internet (having your posting in mind). I was and am solidly online. Good, so I tried to open my 2014 copy. Same message. Ick.

There must be something wrong with the server(s). Everything had worked fine, last time I opened both (of course not at the same time).

So internet is not the cause.

A pretty disaster on a Friday ahead of a working weekend. I am worried about attaching my Prof 2017 licences at this point.

Dear Giuliana,

perhaps a special program on your computer has automatically wiped the hard disk and deleted some files that are important for the retrieval of the license (something like this was the case on my computer last weekend).

If you describe your case and send it per e-mail to you should get help (within 2 working days, I think)
Or you can try to find a solution on the support site

Hope this helps
