Hello Hans,
I only have 2 comments to go with: First, don't assume that Trados plugins made for a specific version will work with the next version or update; second, also don't assume that a future Trados update itself will work correctly if old plugins are installed. The error possibilities just multiply...
When reading you it almost sounds like you have updated during a project and now you get odd behavior from Trados in the middle of a project. Have you? This is telegraphing for trouble...

Studio 2017, TM duplicates and Perfect Match

Poster: Andrei Psyukalov

Hey guys!

We have a huge amount of previously translated files. Those files contain a lot of duplicates. We created a TM based on those files and then cleaned it out from all the duplicates.
But the problem is, when we prepare a new batch of files for translation and we apply Perfect Match all those duplicates creep back in.

The question is, how can we keep our translation memory clean and not let those duplicates get there, so that our newly translated files will be duplicate free and 100% match instead of 99%?

Thanks in advance!

I've never experienced similar issues with previous updates, so this caught me off guard. But what you say makes total sense! I did not update in the middle of a project, but I did try to use the same TM settings as before the update.

Actually, when I found out which was the problem, rather than deleting my post I updated it with the specific information related to this issue. Maybe it can save another translator a headache...

Hi Tom,

One way to do this:

- Copy source to target
- Open the Find&Replace dialog
- Enable Regular expressions
- Enter "." (period) and replace it with "" (nothing)

Let Studio work its magic.

Studio 2017, TM duplicates and Perfect Match | In the Project Settings...

Post title: In the Project Settings...

Hello Andrei,
AFAIK, it's in the Project Settings. There will be a window where previous translated project files are listed for Trados to look and define Perfect Matches, it's not only a question of TM. If you don't want Trados to consider these matches you will have to remove these documents from the window or change the settings during project creation: Maybe chose "Use the original translation origin and status".
Maybe you need the Professional version of Studio to change specific settings regarding Perfect Matches, I don' know exactly.

As for having control of what goes in your TM, that's easy: When you load a TM you can activate/deactivate the 'Update' checkbox as you desire; if the checkbox is deactivated it means the TM will not get updated when you confirm a segment during translation.
With the batch task "Update Main Translation Memory" you then have control over which type of segment in your project file will be updated in a loaded TM, you generally use this task at the end of a project. For example, you can load/create a TM for working during a project ('Update' enabled) and then load and update another TM according to specific settings with this batch task.
99% matches instead of 100% or Perfect Matches means that segments will only slightly differ by numbers or formatting. The following sentences are *not* duplicates:
I have been waiting for 4 hours.
I have been waiting for 6 hours.

Greetings,
Mike

I second this. RegistrationFix.exe did fix the problem so I'm able to work now but I too get error when I add a new file to a project (object reference not set to an instance of an object - or something like that). So far I have been able to work by simply ignoring the error.

adding a new translation unite to an old TM

Hello,

Can somebody please tell me whether is it possible to add a new translation unite (new source and target unite) to an old already existing TM?

Purpose being that I would like to gradually create a vast TM with typical segments that often appear in texts I translate.

Thank you for considering my question

My way to work around this problem is;
- Open the Excel file then save it as XML spreadsheet 2003
- Open the XML spreadsheet in Trados and compete translation then save the translation file as XML spreadsheet
- Open the translation file (XML spreadsheet) in Excel then save it as Excel book.

There may be unwanted lines produced in Trados but it is the best way I figured out for now.

If there are many words which do not need to be translated contained in the source file, I recommend to extract only what needs to be translated to a new file to use in Trados.

My work setting is;
- Windows 10
- Trados Studio 2011 SP2
- MS Office 2016

I hope it helps a bit. [/quote]

Attach that TM to the project with the its Update checkbox unchecked.

When you are done with the translation, then check the Update checkbox and confirm every segment you wish to add to that TM.

When using the retrofit function in Trados 2015 it does not always work and I have no idea why? It goes through the motions, but when I look at the document, changes have not been incorporated.

Has anyone got some idea what the problem may be?

Large Trados 2015 file cannot be opened anymore

I was working on a large project in Trados 2015 – the project consists of approximately 18K segments – and after a while “System out of Memory Exception” error messages started to pop up. Fortunately it did not affect the project since I was able to continue my work after restarting the computer every time the above message occurred (4 times in 2 days).

Today however, a different error message popped up when I clicked on “Save”: “An error occurred while parsing EntityName”. After that I was no more able to open my file or do any other actions with it.

The Hungarian SDL vendor suggested the following possible solutions to no avail:

I did as I was instructed but the line and position in question – which is by the way the very last position of the last line - does not contain any ampersands.

We also tried deleting settings as an alternative solution, but it did not help either.

Could you suggest any other possible solutions so that I could continue working on this file?

Thank you very much for your help. (Please note that I have posted this ticket to the community forums at sdl.com as well)

1. Make a backup of everything.*
2. Create a new project from the customer's package or files as you originally received them.
3. Include your TM from the "old" project in the "new" project.
4. Pretranslate.

*This is worth saying it again: MAKE A BACKUP FIRST. If you create the new project a bit clumsily, it might overwrite everything you have so far, and you very definitely don't want to lose your work with that.

Post title: Selecting the desired tm

Can you describe more precisely what you are doing, esp. regarding selecting the tm you want to export?

You can export a tm from your project view. That only works with enabled tm's (after clicking the desired tm), otherwise the export options is grayed-out.

Alternatively, you can go to the tm view (tab all the way at the bottom left of interface). You can open a tm in the tm view, but that is not necessarily the tm that will be exported: L-click on the vertical bar (with the text "Translation Memories") above those tabs instead to expand that bar and see which tm's are listed there. R-click the listed tm you want to export, Alternatively, r-click on "Translation Memories" in the tree to select other actions.
Does this help?

Post title: Issue might be connected with the MS Word software or the specific Word files in this case

Thanks MikeTrans for your reply.

The initial problem occurred with Studio 2015 so tools used in used in 2017 are not a factor in this case, and I use fairly minimal resources - largish TM (700,00) and a handful of local TBs, (though it is worth remembering as I expand my use of 2017).

I've since worked on some other MS Word files without any issues over the past few days, though I did register a spike today with another word file.

I seem to remember an issue with Studio and Word from a while back, so perhaps it has resurfaced.
