File > option settings are copied to any project you create in Studio.

If you recieve a project from your client, this project already has its own settings, in general different than yours.

With the OpenExchange app it's a matter of 2 clicks per project, so it's not that much…

Anyway, this app can help you in batches, you can select a bunch of projects and apply the settings you wish for all of them.

This link can help you about the scope of the app: [url removed]

Hi again,

Thanks, I'll definitely take a look at the app and link you sent! So what you're saying is that projects are imported with settings by the client, and therefore can only be overruled by Project Settings or by importing these in the way you described earlier? Then why do other settings within File > Options that I randomly set up work, such as ones in tabs like Autocorrect or Editor, but the ones within Verification don't? That doesn't make any sense to me...

… belong to your Studio, your workspace, so the behaviour you mention makes sense, and the reason why Editor settings are not included in the Project Settings. Did you notice it?

On the other hand, projects depend on TMs, terminology TBs, AutoSuggest dictionnaries, and QA settings, so it makes sense they can be included in project templates or even in the general options (File > Options) for any project you create in the future.

From another point of view: Projects can't depend on the colours you select for your Editor or the AutoCorrect entries you decide to include in the list.

I reckon this is one of the most misunderstood concepts of Studio. But as soon as you get it, it'll be really helpful.

Hello!

Every time I download a xliff file from a client's platform to be imported in Studio, I get this message:

XLIFF validation error on line 1offset 49: The value 'YML' is not valid according to any of the memberTypes of union.

What does it mean?

The platform where I export the file is called Transifex.

I also know that when I translate the file with Studio and try to re import, it does not work well.

Any idea?

Francesco

This XLIFF file is either corrupt or does not adhere to the specifications.
In which program has this XLIFF file been created? Which XLIFF version is it?

Did you check with your client whether it is meant to be compatible with Studio?

Another source of error might be the download, which might corrupt the file. I have quite often experienced that XML files are corrupted when being sent as mail attachment and I suggest that they always be zipped before they are transferred. Download should work better though, but maybe the download process did not terminate correctly.

I suggest you ask your client to send you the XLF file zipped, any you then try to open the unzipped file in Studio. If it works, you know that the problem is related to the transport. If it does not, then it is a problem of compatibility.

Hi,

I have a problem with the translation file which convert from sdlxliff to sdlrpx.
Client sent me the sdlrpx, I work on Trados 2014, and convert back to sdlrpx.

Problem is, I could not save file, there was a message Exception of type 'System Out of Memory Exception' was thrown.
I also could not open a file, the same message was shown.

What should I do?
I could not attached files of error to this message.
So below is an example.

Thank you for your kind assistance.

Anna

A project template contains two categories of settings: system-specific settings such as the Spellchecker you want to use, the AutoSuggest and Autopropagation settings, etc. and project-specific settings such as the Verification, File Types, Translation memories, etc.

The settings in the first category impact the way your Studio works, regardless of the project you work on. So the settings for AutoSuggest for example will always stay the same unless you change them.

The project-specific settings on the other hand are taken from the project template and copied to your project every time you create a project. This means that your project will use whatever settings you have defined in the template you based your project on. If you create, your own projects, you will therefore see the settings that you want (the ones you have defined in your template).

When you receive a project package however, the settings of this project are the ones that were in the project template of the person who created the project, which means that you have no influence on these settings. But you can obviously change them as Jesus explained. If you face this problem frequently, I suggest you ask your client to adapt his project template so that the packages he sends you have this setting for the copyright check set.
This is by design, because it ascertains that a person who receives a package automatically works with the options that have been set by the originator of the package.

Your own settings apply to the projects you create, but not to the ones you receive.

Thank you, Water.

The client does not send me the file, I extract it from Transifex. In theory I should be able to extract the file from Transifex, translated it and import it back.

It never works well, I suspect because of the warning.

I wonder if there is something in my Studio settings that should be changed.

Is there a way to FIX the xliff file and eliminate the warning?

Thanks for your input, very appreciated.

Francesco

... before sending it by email.

It happens quite often (depending on the email software used) that text-based file such as XML, XLIFF, etc. become corrupted during the transport.

It should therefore be best practice to always zip such files before sending them.

Francesca

The XML error message seems to indicate that your projects.xml file got corrupted, so I suggest you delete it. You'll find it in your "Documents" folder, in the subfolder "Studio 2009", then "Projects". Delete it, then relaunch Studio. It will recreate the file.
The drawback is that your list of projects will be empty, but you can easily recover the project(s) you need using the command "Open project" and navigating to the folder where your project is stored and open the project file.

If this does not solve your problem and Studio still does not start, then follow the procedure outlined in KB article 4457

Trados 2014: System Out of Memory Exception | What do you mean by "convert"

Post title: What do you mean by "convert"

I am not sure I understand what you did. You cannot convert a SDLXLIFF to an SDLRPX, as these are two completely different things.

SDLXLIFF is your bilingual file, SDLRPX is a container (in fact a ZIP file) that contains the entire package that you send back to your client after you have finished the translation.

This means that after you have finished your translation, saved your file (the SDLXLIFF) and closed the Editor, you go to the Project view, right-click on the corresponding project and click on "Create return package". This will then create the return package (SDLRPX file) that you send back to your client.

So, please tell us in which of these operations you get the error message you posted.

Thank you for your answer.

I will explain like this,
I use Trados 2014, my client uses World Server.
So they send me SDL WSXZ document, then I open to work as SDL Trados Studio
When finishing I convert it to sdlrpx with the same extention of SDL WSXZ document, and send back to client.

The problem arised after I edited the file and could not save.
I could also not open a file to edit.

Client sent the files as package, some files could not be saved, some files could.
another package, a file could not be opened, the remaining could be opened and saved.

I noticed that the problem files are all the largest files in the package.

I can save and open all problem files now, after closing all files and opened it one by one.
I think it because of large files, so the problem occurred.

Thank you very much.

Post title: Word Count in Trados Studio 2014

Hi everybody,

I have a number of PowerPoint files and I need to know their word count to submit my quote. I'm using Trados Studio 2014. Is there an easy way to calculate the word count of all these files in one window instead of having to open each file alone to get its word count through these referred to steps?

I'm also expecting to receive an updated Word file. Is there a way to count the updates in such file?

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Transating .epub files in Trados 2014

Poster: Neil Greenough

I'm using Trados 2014 and from what I can see, there is no way of translating .epub files without converting them to another file format first. In doing so, the formatting of the text will change and therefore the translated file would be formatted differently to the source document.

Does anybody have experience of translating .epub files in Trados and if so, how did you approach it?

Thanks
