Hi there,

I've had troubles with my Studio 2015 for a few weeks now; probably being caused by the installation of Wordfast. When trying to open a package sent by a client, I get an error message followed by a long list of tasks. I have reinstalled Studio, but the problem persists.

SDL Trados, entering translated screens in target

Hi,

I am currently trying to translate a technical user manual.

A translation exists for a previous version of this manual but it was not done in SDL:

In order to keep in the new version (target) what had already been translated in previous documentation I decided to align in SDL in the source the new document version (that includes also old parts) and I aligned it with the english translated document of the old document.

I did the alignment and created a TM from it.

I created the new project by always inserting the latest doc version, trying to only translate the delta of strings that are not translated.

I imagined that, during alignment, as I entered in the target an already translated manual, with already translated screenshot, I would have still seen those in my new target document, but unfortunately, from the preview...I can see the screenshots reflect the ones from the source document.

Does anyone know if there is a way to align both text and screenshots in SDL in order to keep already translated screens in the target.

Please let me know.

Thank you very much,

Paola

Trados 2017, how to get file statistics

G'day everyone

I have an SDLXLIFF file with some segments already translated (and their status is "translated") and most of those segment are marked as "100%". There are also some translated segments marked "99%" (and their status is "draft"). Then, there are some segments that have content in the target text, but their status is "not translated". Finally, some segments have nothing in the target text (status also "not translated").

Is it possible to generate some word counts telling me how many segments are "translated", how many are "draft", how many are "not translated" with content, and how many are "not translated" without content? I've tried the "Analyze" feature but it shows only repetitions and non-repetitions.

Thanks
Samuel

Sorry, was about to suggest the Analysis function, but I see you have already tried that.

Post title: Confirmation Statistics

On the Project or Files view, you have a tab at the bottom called Confirmation Statistics that tells you how many words have which status.

However, there is no way to differentiate untranslated entries with content and without content easily -- to do this, in the Editor with the file(s) open I'd set the In Target filter to Not Translated and search for "^", which should give you only the segments with content, and set their status to something you're not using (e.g., "Sign off Rejected"). After analyzing again you'll see the Confirmation Statistics change with the info you need.

Hope it helps!

Post title: RE: "not translated" without content

In Advanced Display Filter:

1. Go to 'Content' tab => Check 'Regular Expression' box => Type ^$ in 'Target:' (this means [start of text][end of text] with nothing between them = empty segment)
2. Go to 'Filter Attributes' tab => Select 'Not Translated' (and/or 'Draft') =>Add (sign '>') => Apply filter
If you feel that you are going to use this filter very frequently, save it to avoid running this sequence every time when need be.

Once filtered, you can assign any other status (as mentioned above by Rossana Triaca) just for counting purposes. For example, let draft (99%) remain draft and let not translated with empty target remain 'Not translated'. What else... Ah, for not translated with content (actually such segments must be 'draft' because all—not only 99%— fuzzy matches are) assign 'Translation Rejected' (or 'Sign Off Rejected' as mentioned above by Rossana Triaca again) for example and then run batch task 'Translation Count'.

SDL Studio short term network license?

Hi,
Ever heard of the above, a SDL Studio short term network license?
Say a week or two...
Wouldn't be useful for an ad hoc team for a project, which may include the revisor, e.g. if s/he is one of the translators?
Thanks in advance.

Hello, colleagues!

I am using SDL Trados 2017 and everytime I want to confirm and pass to the next segment I have to press Ctrl + Alt + Enter.

I think it's easier and faster to remove one key from that combination. It could be Ctrl + Enter or Alt + Enter. Where could I configure this change?

Thank you!

Hi

Please can you help me with this:

I am just typing my text in the target column of trados and at the end of it it is turned into Bold characters, of course I did not select that option, nor it is a background setting; both selecting sentence and clicking on the bold symbol and the clear formatting options do not work.

Please let me know if this already happened to you

Thank you very much,

Best Regards.

Post title: Will doubling my RAM to 32 make any difference in getting this shoddy piece of software to work?

I only recently upgraded from 2015 to 2017 and while I like the new features on paper, this software is shoddy to say the least. I've also recently upgraded my hardware and have a 64-bit operating system, 16 GB RAM, a SSD drive and Core i7 processor and high-end motherboard. My PC technician assures me that further upgrading to 32 GB RAM will make no perceivable difference. Can anyone confirm this is the case? Will doubling my RAM to 32 make no real difference? If it would make a difference I'd go for it; what the hell, I've already spent a small fortune upgrading Studio and my hardware so...

I'm writing this as I'm bored while running the final stages of my translation process, which includes advanced filtering, spell checking on certain filtered segments only, locking certain segments. Spell checking in Studio has always been clumsy and slow, but it seems even worse after applying filters. After correcting or ignoring a given error, it can hang for minutes until it moves on to the next misspelled word.

Granted, the project I'm working on is 4 PowerPoint files and a Word file, with a combined 24000 segments, but with my new hardware I'd hoped Studio could handle the work at hand, but it seems not, so what I expect from 2019 is yet more trouble and for it to be even slower still.

I just timed how long it took to lock the segments I filtered and it was a whopping seven minutes.

I definitely won't be upgrading right away, especially as it's not possible to keep 2017 after installing 2019.

It's a real shame I'm not exited about an upgrade of one my most important tools; in theory the features are great, but in practice it's a joke.

They need to iron out the basic flaws before adding fancy new features that only serve to make it increasingly more unstable.

I don't get off on negativity, but SDL has had a good chunk of my cash over the years, and all things considered, they are not deserving of any praise to my mind.

Anyway, to finish on something positive, the only saving grace (and that's not the Company's) are the people whose blogs I've read and advice I've followed along this learning curve, including Emma, Nora, Jerzy and even Paul, who doesn't really count is he's on SDL's payroll. Only joking!

Good luck to you all, especially those who are going to take the plunge and upgrade as soon as it's released. You're a lot braver than I am.

I've been working with Studio since ver. 2009. At first it was my employer's copy, then (from 2011 and thereon) I bought it for myself. I worked with Studio 2015 on a 4-Gb computer and I cannot remember any performance problem. Now I have a 12-Gb PC. Minor lags happened but they were tolerable (within normal limits). I often focused my criticism on Trados for its wide range of errors a mere user cannot resolve on his/her own and for half-made or missing features, but slow performance was not a headache for me.

Well, you can test this yourself by keeping the Task Manager open while you perform some heavy-duty tasks in Trados, to see how much RAM and CPU it uses. I did that recently and discovered that Trados 2015 and 2017 rarely go above 30% of CPU usage, even if 80-90% is available, and that it doesn't give you extra speed just because you have more RAM. Even gigantic projects that I tested never used more than half a gig of RAM, even though I have 16 available. If the software is not specifically designed to run faster when more resources are available, then it won't run faster once it hits its own upper limit.

I suspect (but I'm just guessing) that an SSD versus an HDD won't really affect your Trados speed either.
I just timed how long it took to lock the segments I filtered and it was a whopping seven minutes.
Sounds familiar. In the past week I had two Trados jobs... one with 5000 segments (41 files, 4.5 MB total) and one with 8000 segments (25 files, 8.0 MB total). Any productivity boost I may have had through working smarter, harder and faster went down the drain during simple things in Trados, e.g. selecting segments or changing segment statuses.

I think we have to face it: Trados is designed for small to medium sized jobs only (under 1000 segments). I'm not sure if MemoQ is better in this regard.

In an analysis of 870 files I see both Repetitions and Cross-file Repetitions. I can understand the latter category, but what do Repetitions mean with 870 files?

Repetition would not take into account segments that are identical among multiple files. For one project it, therefore, would make sense to take into account both counts.

The problem is when an agency splits a project between multiple translators and one translator has segments that another translator has translated and sent to the TM.

So the file-intern repetitions in file #1, those in file #2 , in file #3 etc. are totalled in the category Repetitions (over 870 files)?
