Dear colleagues,

I'd like to talk about 2 things that a few of you might be interested in: getting Trados 2014 really cheap, and what to do if you are on a Mac system if you want to use Trados.

After the group option is out, I hope I'm not hurting anyone's interests by telling you about my experience about a really cheap source for SDL Trados Studio Freelance, much cheaper than on the group option. While I was trying to find out about the difference between what freelance and freelance+ may give me and how cheap, I stumbled upon an American re-seller, Pantoglot LLC. After carefully looking around the firm, I couldn't resist to pay $374,00 USD for the + version, only to find out to my regret a day afterwards that they aren't authorized to ship to Europe. However, if any of you have a Latin-American address, they'll be more than happy to provide for you for that absolutely good price. They are very kind and honest, they returned my payment instantly as they were informed about my situation. I own them this.

As to Mac users, I am one, and, unlike Wordfast, Trados doesn't run on OSX platforms. Except that an application called ParallelsDesktop as a virtual machine has been running on my Mac OS 10.5 for 5 years and so could on yours. I have an old WinXP running on this platform as I need it for a few applications like WinWord or my old BYKY to create my own files to study new languages. To my relief, the new Trados I have just bought runs on it, but if you want to acquire it too, you have to know one glitch.

Although the program runs on this virtual Windows, it isn't capable of saving the resulting translations correctly, or to open the saved ones. This is because when I open a file from my Mac system, it works fine, but Win recognizes them to be at a virtual place like drive Z: or Y:, and the saved interim files cannot be opened from there. I have found that I had better replace the files to be opened to the more real C: drive into a separate folder and then, although this may still count as a virtual place, it is already within the Win system. The unfinished project files and everything can be saved and retrieved from that folder perfectly.

I hope I have helped at least a few of you, or given some good ideas. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all of you. P. Simon
